Pregnancy and hypertension

Under the term arterial hypertension during pregnancy means a variety of types of increasing blood pressure. Some pregnant women may have some kind of kidney disease, in which there is possible increased blood pressure, others have hypertension before pregnancy, in others it can be caused by pregnancy itself.

Medical research suggests the possibility of developing several variants of events that contribute to the increase of blood pressure during pregnancy. First, it may be an option when a woman already had hypertension before the onset of pregnancy. Secondly, when the arterial pressure remains elevated only during pregnancy, and after childbirth returns to normal. And thirdly, arterial hypertension can be considered as one of the manifestations of such complication after pregnancy as preeclampsia. It often happens that the situation is a combination of all these cases, for example, in about a third of cases, pre-eclampsia occurs in women who have hypertension before the onset of pregnancy. Although in all these cases there is an increased blood pressure, the course, causes and possible complications, as well as the treatment of all these various diseases by their nature will differ significantly.

Pregnancy and birth in women with arterial hypertension

Pregnant women who have high blood pressure should be on the dispensary account with the therapist, and not only with the obstetrician. In this case, the specialist should not only raise the BP in any way, but also prescribe certain preventive measures in order to prevent possible complications.

As a rule, treatment begins with the distribution of rest and work time. Any work at night during pregnancy is strictly prohibited. At a time when elevated blood pressure is noted, work should also be completely stopped. It is best at this time to generally go to inpatient treatment. It is recommended to take infusions on soothing herbs, since often the neurogenic factor can play a big role in the appearance of arterial hypertension. The most common for this purpose are infusions on the root of the motherwort or valerian. In those periods when the disease manifests itself most acutely, hypotensive drugs should be prescribed. However, you can not take these medications yourself - they are prescribed only by a doctor, based on what means in a particular case will not harm the future mother and her baby. The drug is also taken strictly according to the procedure prescribed by the specialist - any changes in the mode of admission or termination of it can lead to irreversible complications.

Inpatient examination and treatment is prescribed:

  • At pregnancy terms of up to 12 weeks - to select the necessary treatment.
  • During periods of exacerbations.
  • With complications.
  • Under certain circumstances - two weeks before delivery.

More recently, women suffering from heart disease were categorically not recommended to have children, but in recent days, thanks to the latest advances in medicine, many women with similar diseases, including hypertension, can still experience the joy of motherhood.

However, in any case, if a pregnant woman has any form of high blood pressure, her treatment is more likely to succeed if she herself is responsible enough to monitor her condition, contact the doctor in a timely manner and not engage in self-medication that is extremely dangerous in such a situation. If there are such diseases, pregnancy should be well planned, consultation with the attending physician is obligatory, so that, if necessary, it is possible to start taking the necessary drugs before conception. And the most important thing at the same time - strictly follow all the recommendations of the doctor, because it depends on how the life of the child, and mother.
