Erosion of teeth
Erosion of the teeth is a progressive process, characterized by a decrease in the tissues of the teeth( dentin and enamel).Erosive lesion is observed mainly in middle-aged people and is characterized by a fairly long flow( about 10-15 years). To date, the cause of erosion of teeth is not clear, but there are various assumptions. There is an opinion that this process can begin due to improper use of oral hygiene products( improperly selected toothbrush, toothpaste or powder). In addition, the occurrence of erosion is caused by a large number of fruits and juices of citrus fruits. Some doctors - dentists believe that an important role in causing the erosion of dental hard tissues play endocrine disorders ( hyperthyroidism, etc.).This statement has a right to exist, as in 50% of cases, erosion of the teeth detected against the background of an enlarged thyroid gland and its functional disorders
Symptoms
initial stage of development characterized by erosion loss of brightness in a limited area of the tooth. In order for this area to be clearly visible - the tooth is pre-dried and 5% tincture of iodine is applied to it. The affected area then becomes brown or yellow in color. Erosions most often appear on incisors, premolars and canines, but may also be present on other teeth.
In its appearance, erosion is a round or oval defect in the enamel, which is located in the transverse or oblique direction on the most convex part of the vestibular surface of the enamel of the tooth. In most cases, the bottom of the erosion is hard, smooth and shiny. Gradual expansion and deepening of the boundaries of erosion entails the loss of part of the dentin and the entire enamel of the vestibular tooth surface. Pain sensations are often absent, or very weakly expressed and largely manifested as a rule only when the disease enters the active phase. Pain appears when cleaning teeth, as well as chemical irritants and cold air.
dental erosion is divided into two stages:
- Active: the rapid destruction of enamel and severe pain sensitivity
- Stable: slow destruction of enamel and weakly expressed sensitivity
In depth destruction, erosion is divided into three levels:
- Elementary: affects only the superficial layers of enamel
- Average: affected the entire thickness of the enamel of the tooth cover, to the enamel - dentine connection
- Deep: among other things, affects the surface layers of dentin
Erosionth tooth enamel must be distinguished from defect and a tapered surface caries
Treatment Treatment of all types of dental tissues erosion performed considering the activity of both the process and the nature of concurrent somatic diseases. Complex dental treatment provides for administration of phosphorus and calcium preparations( if there is a decrease in their level in the patient's blood), microelements and vitamins.
Unfortunately, in most cases, to a qualified dental help people turn only when the enamel erosion is already in a very poor condition, so a simple therapy in these cases do not succeed.
