The color of the tongue: what it says. What pathologies lie behind each shade

The tongue is a muscular organ covered with a mucous membrane, consisting of more than ten thousand papilla-analyzers, allowing a person to recognize the taste of the food taken with many complex shades, as well as take a significant part in the primary processing of food and the correct functioning of the speech apparatus. In addition, the tongue serves as a kind of indicator of the general state of the human body and is an indispensable assistant during the initial examination. Based on the shape of this organ, its color and structure, the presence and intensity of plaque, an experienced specialist can to identify this or that pathological process at the initial stage, when the patient has not yet been found to have the appropriate symptoms.

The color and structure of the tongue helps the doctor to make a preliminary diagnosis.

The color and structure of the tongue helps the doctor to make a preliminary diagnosis.

This diagnostic method dates back to Ancient Asia, where experienced professionals of oriental medicine believed that language is a conditional map on which all internal organs of a person are located and, depending on which part of it is undergoing unhealthy changes, it was possible to judge the malfunctions of one or another organ. This method came to domestic medicine back in 1835 thanks to the talented doctor Mikhail Nechaev, who devoted a separate a work called "Recognition of Diseases by Language", in which the scientist spoke in detail about the connection of language with the rest of the human organs organism.

Anatomical structure and main functions

Anatomically, the human tongue consists of striated muscle tissue covered with a mucous membrane. Conditionally, it can be divided into two components: the root of the tongue, which connects to the human oral cavity and, directly, the body itself. The upper surface of the tongue is called the "back" and has an even, soft structure, covered with many papillae, which, in turn, are associated with the rest of the internal organs through the central nervous system and are powerful taste receptors that allow a person to distinguish a wide range of flavors.

The structure of the language

The structure of the language

The fundamental functions of this muscle include:

  • an auxiliary function in the process of digestion (the tongue helps to chew food, forming a food lump, which it pushes into the esophagus);
  • correct functioning of the speech apparatus (reproduction of clear speech by a person);
  • regulation of salivation.

As a rule, if no latent and chronic diseases have been identified inside the human body, then the surface of the tongue has an even pale pink the surface, without excessive plaque and pronounced changes in its structure, the papillae are visible, and the organ itself is mobile and does not cause painful sensations.

Reference! The presence of a small amount of whitish or yellow plaque (in winter) on the surface of the tongue is not a pathology, since this minor disorders directly in the human oral cavity (caries, gingivitis, stomatitis), as well as various food allergies.

In cases where the amount of plaque forms a thick layer, the shade of the organ changes, an unpleasant odor is present, and the surface the tongue changes (painful sores, cracks appear), then this may indicate the first and vivid manifestations of various pathologies. In such cases, it is recommended to consult a doctor as soon as possible to identify the root cause of such changes and further treatment of the disease.

Diagnosis of diseases

When examining the appearance of the tongue as part of a study of the patient's general health, the specialist should always remember that the organ is conventionally divided into certain zones, each of which is responsible for the corresponding internal organ.

Table. What organs are responsible for each zone of the tongue

Language zone Internal organs
Back area The reproductive and urinary systems.
Central area Gastrointestinal tract, spleen.
Tip of the tongue Heart muscle.
Ribbon-like area (the part between the center area and the tip) Respiratory and immune systems.
Side area Liver and gallbladder.
Fold in the middle of the tongue Spine.

When examining the tongue, the doctor should focus on the following indicators:

  • whether the color of the tongue is uniform, whether there are pronounced color changes in a particular area of the organ;
    The language itself can take on various shades that indicate problems in certain systems in the human body.

Reference! To make a more accurate diagnosis, it is necessary to exclude the possibility of changes in the integument of the tongue, directly related to diseases of the oral cavity. In such cases, an additional visit to the dentist is required.

By the color of the tongue

A change in the color of the tongue, the appearance of characteristic spots in a certain area of the organ may indicate a wide spectrum of diseases that can be easily detected both during self-examination and during routine diagnostics in doctor.

Table. The color of the tongue and the possible reasons that caused it

Tongue color Causes
White color

White color

The presence of a group of spots or a single color change along the edges of the tongue may indicate the presence of candidiasis in the patient, if the spots localized mainly in the sublingual region, this indicates pathological changes in the vessels of the brain and a lack of oxygen.
Red color

The saturated scarlet color of the patient's tongue indicates a metabolic disorder and a lack of vitamins, in features of group B and iron, pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system or disease blood. If the color turns into a raspberry hue, then this may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process inside the body with an increase in the overall body temperature. This color is also typical for patients with serious infections or poisoning.
The presence of individual red spots, which can also be in the form of various small bubbles filled with liquid, localized mainly on the sides of the organ, is a sign of herpes. If the spot is covered with dense scales, there is a chance of developing a cancerous tumor. Bright spots of red color in the patient can also be with scarlet fever.

They signal about serious diseases of the blood, its stagnation inside the body, serious poisoning and disorders of the respiratory system.

By the nature and color of the plaque

If thin plaque is the norm, then those cases when plaque completely covers the mucous membrane of the tongue without the ability to evaluate it color and structure, indicate the presence of certain pathological conditions, often a large amount of toxins inside organism.

Only a small layer of plaque may be the norm. The rest of the cases are signs of disease

Types of plaque

  1. White thin layer of plaque, which can be easily removed, indicates a weak work of the gastrointestinal tract, in particular the presence of gastritis, if such a plaque was found on the central part of the tongue. In cases where the plaque layer is thick and has a grayish tint, this is a sign of a large amount of toxins that can be caused by frequent constipation.

  2. Dense yellow tint signals about liver diseases, for example, the presence of hepatitis in a patient.
  3. Purple bloom, localized over the entire surface of the tongue with spots, speaks of serious circulatory disorders and blood stasis.

Important! Spicy foods and spices, various drinks, the use of antibiotics can also provoke a discoloration of the tongue and increase the amount of plaque.

Other indicators

There are other specific markers that allow you to identify a particular pathology. So, for example, severe edema can be a signal of a malfunction of the liver, the curvature of the organ itself indicates serious neurological disorders and ischemic stroke, its tremor and loss of taste are endocrine disorders, and if teeth are imprinted on the surface of the tongue, then this is a sign of problems with digestion.

If teeth are imprinted on the tongue, this signals digestive problems.

If the papillae become saturated red, then such changes are an indicator of diseases of the pelvic organs, the presence small red spots and ulcers - an indicator of excessive acidity of the stomach, a burning sensation is a sign of cervical osteochondrosis.

Diagnostics can be carried out independently, preferably in the morning and strictly on an empty stomach, after rinsing the oral cavity. However, do not forget about qualified specialists who can always make the correct diagnosis, because with self-medication, there is still a great risk of making a mistake and choosing the wrong therapy, which can only aggravate the overall condition.
