Papaverine: indications for use in hemorrhoids

Papaverine hydrochloride is an inexpensive but very effective myotropic antispasmodic widely used in modern medicine.

It is often present in medical appointments. The pharmaceutical industry produces several dosage forms with papaverine, the use of which is recommended in different fields of medicine, for obtaining, anesthetic, sedative and relaxing effect on smooth muscles and muscle fibers.

That is, when a quick and safe effect on the state of a certain muscle group in the body is required.

Papaverine for hemorrhoids is a rapid implementation of the abilities of an opium alkaloid, an isoquinoline derivative, which begins to act in a few minutes and has low toxicity.

In the treatment of hemorrhoids, rectal suppositories are most often used. Their peculiarity lies in the local effect directly in the affected area.

This makes it possible to almost instantaneously resolve existing problems due to the action of the main active ingredient.

The practice of widely combining papaverine suppositories with other drugs allows you to immediately:

  • prevent the development of a negative scenario and possible complications in the rectal area, which may arise due to spasm;
  • eliminate the symptoms of pathology quickly and without consequences;
  • to act on the smooth rectal muscles located in its lower section;
  • relax the anal sphincter;
  • reduce the significant risk of blood clots;
  • avoid stagnant formations of venous blood in the rectum, in the perianal space and directly in the hemorrhoidal protrusions;
  • limit the spread of the painful process;
  • remove the accumulation of feces by eliminating obstacles to their passage.

At minor stages of development of hemorrhoidal cones, regular use of suppositories helps to get rid of external manifestations of the disease due to the ability of ADV to reduce the accumulation of blood in the veins and normalize the activity of muscle fibers.

However, Papaverine suppositories are not a remedy, but a way to eliminate painful manifestations. If other methods of dealing with hemorrhoids do not provide for the elimination of the main provoking factors, relapses of the disease are possible, and the need to re-use the suppository is possible.

Papaverine is produced by the pharmaceutical industry in several dosage forms that are used in a wide variety of medical fields.

This is due to its broad spectrum of action and beneficial properties aimed at several aspects at once.

Papaverine: beneficial properties and other dosage forms

Papaverine has been widely used by proctologists for a long time. Suppositories for hemorrhoids are not the only dosage form that is used in proctology and the popularity that is deserved acquired papaverine hydrochloride, due to the wide possibilities of using the drug in various pharmaceutical forms release.

The main effect of papaverine is to relieve spasms in any smooth muscle organ and the same effect on the muscle fibers of the vascular walls.

The undoubted advantage is the almost instantaneous effect achieved due to the ability of instant absorption and assimilation.

The lack of toxicity, when properly dosed, helps to achieve the desired result without negative consequences.

On the shelves of pharmacies, you can find many dosage forms containing an isoquinoline derivative that is useful in many cases:

  • rectal suppositories used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, relief of postoperative conditions during intervention (invasive and minimally invasive in the rectum and perianal space);
  • papaverine tablets, for adults (dosage 40 mg) and children (10 mg), prescribed for multiple indications, ranging from pathologies of the digestive organs and up to conditions accompanied by spasms of the vessels of the head brain;
  • solutions for injections, more often carried out intramuscularly, and less often intravenous, when an accelerated achievement of the result is necessary.

Suppositories with papaverine for hemorrhoids are not the only, but the most common form of using papaverine hydrochloride in proctological practice.

Its demand is due to the possibility of delivering the active substance directly to the place of the problem.

The rest of the medications are used as needed, when:

  • spasms of smooth muscle fibers of blood vessels;
  • spasm of the respiratory system, genitourinary and digestive;
  • high blood pressure arising in a pathological vascular reaction;
  • excitability of the heart muscle and the accelerated conduction of an impulse through it;
  • the need to provide a sedative effect on the nervous system (the effect is achieved when used in a high dosage).

The possibility of using any dosage form for hemorrhoids is not limited by anything, since this disease is polyetiological.

Tablets can be used to prevent negative effects, before meals, or in situations where there are no specific conditions for the use of rectal suppositories.

The release form designated as "Papaverine in ampoules", "Papaverine injections" or "Papaverine injections" is recommended at significant stages of development of pathology, or in surgical procedures.

The use of other dosage forms in the treatment of hemorrhoids

The undoubted advantage of the active active substance, which is part of any dosage form released as a monopreparation, is its versatile pharmacological action.

It is no coincidence that papaverine is immediately referred to two groups of medications:

  • vasodilators (vasodilators);
  • eliminating spastic pain (myotropic antispasmodics).

This leads to its use not only in the treatment of hemorrhoidal formations, but also in the treatment of disorders of the gastric tract functionality.

So you can simultaneously act on the main provoking factor leading to the appearance of hemorrhoidal cones.

As a myotropic antispasmodic, papaverine tablets, taken orally, reduce spastic pain in gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, gastritis and other chronic gastrointestinal diseases.

It affects the smooth muscles of the intestine, the relaxation of which leads to a more trouble-free passage of feces in case of constipation, and therefore, reduces pain during bowel movements.

As a vasodilator, lowers blood pressure and reduces blood flow by relaxing muscle fibers in the walls of blood vessels, having a positive effect on the accompanying intensive hemorrhoids bleeding.

Contraindications for use

Like any medicine, Papaverine has contraindications for use. It is not prescribed for hypotensive patients, deeply elderly patients, people suffering from renal failure and glaucoma.

In childhood, the drug is not used until six months, and then it is recommended at a reduced dosage. The use of rectal suppositories is the best option for obtaining the desired effect, so they can be used by both pregnant women and children.

Minor side effects in some cases, in the form of dry mouth or nausea, are absent in suppositories from hemorrhoids.

Manifestations of headache, sweating, drowsiness and other disorders of the central nervous system, when using suppositories, are noted only in case of excessive use of drugs.
