Taste in the mouth with pancreatitis: causes, symptoms, treatment, drugs, folk remedies

A constant unpleasant aftertaste, a smell that even careful oral hygiene is one of the symptoms that clearly indicate malfunctions in the gastrointestinal path.

The taste in the mouth with pancreatitis is a consequence of the inflammatory and degenerative process in the pancreas, general intoxication. It will not be possible to solve the problem if you do not contact a gastroenterologist for the treatment of the disease. With stable remission, discomfort disappears by itself, because they are only a symptom of the disease.

The relationship of the oral cavity with pancreatitis

Contrary to popular belief, the process of digestion does not begin in the stomach, but in the mouth. Saliva helps to soften food entering the mouth and prepare it for further processing.

Pancreatitis Is one of the common diseases of the digestive tract that affects the pancreas. In case of malfunctions, the organ does not produce pancreatic juice in sufficient volume or the concentration of necessary enzymes decreases in it. Also, the pancreas is involved in the synthesis of hormones. The diseased organ produces less of them than is needed.

Pancreatitis is diagnosed by considering not only the taste in the mouth

Pancreatitis is diagnosed by considering not only the taste in the mouth

An unpleasant taste in the mouth with pancreatitis is a consequence of a combination of reasons:

  1. For the disease in the stage of exacerbation, acute stitching and cutting pains on the right under the ribs or surrounding the chest are characteristic. The endocrine system reacts to them and the stress caused by them, pain shock by releasing adrenaline and cortisol. An excess of these hormones in the body provokes severe dryness, burning, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  2. An inflammatory and degenerative process in the tissues of the pancreas, the replacement of "active" cells with "inert" ones means problems with the synthesis of insulin. This leads to an increase in blood sugar levels, which is characterized by a feeling of unquenchable thirst, dryness, burning, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  3. At exacerbation pancreatitis, many dishes, foods provoke vomiting. Because of this, the mucous membrane of the mouth dries up, an unpleasant taste and smell appears. Another symptom characteristic of the acute stage of the disease is prolonged diarrhea, which provides severe dehydration. In this case, a sharp chemical taste appears in the mouth, a smell reminiscent of acetone.

Often, pancreatitis is accompanied by cholecystitis - not only the pancreas suffers, but also the liver and gallbladder. In this case, a tangible aftertaste of bitterness appears in the mouth.

What can be the taste in the mouth with pancreatitis

With pancreatitis, people complain about different types of taste in the mouth. Unpleasant sensations are especially intense in the morning, before breakfast. According to them, an experienced gastroenterologist can judge the course of the course of the disease.

Sweet taste in the mouth with pancreatitis

Caused by a lack of insulin, indicates an imbalance in the carbohydrate balance. When the pancreas is no longer able to synthesize this hormone in the required volumes, the blood sugar level inevitably rises.

Glucose, along with the blood flow, is carried to all organs and tissues, and enters the saliva. Often enough attention is not paid to this symptom. They are simply surprised at the sweetish taste in the mouth, considering it harmless and slowly contact a gastroenterologist.

Those who nevertheless "showed vigilance", in most cases, are diagnosed with pancreatitis at an early stage. Until it comes to intense pain and a chronic form, it is much easier to cope with it.

Sour taste in the mouth with pancreatitis

Reflux-related. Undigested food residues partially dissolved by hydrochloric acid enter the esophagus from the stomach undigested due to a lack of pancreatic and gastric juices or enzymes in them.

As a result, in addition to pancreatitis, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the lower third of the esophagus occurs. The acid gradually rises higher and higher, providing an appropriate flavor in the mouth.

In the oral cavity, pathogenic microflora is inevitably present. These microorganisms "convert" the glucose in saliva into lactic acid. A person who ignores the sour taste in the mouth will soon have to visit not only a gastroenterologist, but also a dentist. Lactic acid quickly destroys tooth enamel, caries develops.

Bitter taste in the mouth with pancreatitis

Indicates the development of biliary pancreatitis due to diagnoses of cholecystitis or gallstone disease. Both of these diseases provoke a blockage of the bile ducts.

Excess bile enters the pancreas, irritating its tissues, and from there it enters the saliva, onto the oral mucosa. A permanent bitter taste appears in the mouth, a yellowish coating on the tongue.

The reasons for the development of chronic pancreatitis

In about half of the cases, a person "provides" himself with pancreatitis on his own. It is often the taste in the mouth that makes him turn to a gastroenterologist.

Any unpleasant taste that appears in the mouth cannot be treated as an independent disease. It is only a concomitant symptom of pancreatitis.

If it is possible to achieve a stable remission or restore the functioning of the pancreas in full, it disappears along with other symptoms characteristic of pancreatitis.

Treating symptoms

Treatment of pancreatitis and its accompanying symptoms, including taste in the mouth, begins with a diagnosis. In most cases, the patient is required to pass only blood and urine tests. If the gastroenterologist has doubts about the diagnosis, it is necessary to undergo an ultrasound scan.

Nutrition correction

Get rid of pancreatitis and the unpleasant taste in the mouth caused by it without observing diet, it is impossible in principle. Changing the diet is aimed at minimizing the load on the digestive tract, reducing the production of gastric and pancreatic juice. Therefore, food should be as "gentle" as possible. This also applies to taste, and temperature, and consistency, and the volume of portions.

If the disease has already passed into the chronic stage, you will have to follow the diet recommended for pancreatitis constantly. And not only because of the unpleasant taste in the mouth. Any breakdown in most cases provokes an exacerbation, aggravates digestive problems.

Nutrition for pancreatitis

"Table number 5", prescribed to patients with pancreatitis, helps to get rid of the unpleasant taste in the mouth relatively quickly.

The list of foods, drinks, meals and cooking methods that are "inaccessible" for people with pancreatitis is quite long:

  • soft yeast bread (any, but especially wheat), all pastries from butter, yeast dough;
  • rich fatty broths (meat, fish, chicken, even mushroom);
  • all smoked meats, pickles (homemade and store);
  • foods and dishes with high fat content (lard, margarine, jellied meat);
  • fatty meat, poultry (lamb, goose, duck, game), red sea fish;
  • canned food (purchased and homemade products), semi-finished products, instant meals, any other food containing preservatives, dyes, flavors in excess;
  • fast food, sweets, pastry creams, carbonated drinks, ice cream (due to the high calorie content and excess of "fast" carbohydrates);
  • products, drinks containing cocoa beans (coffee, cocoa, chocolate);
  • barley, corn grits;
  • citruses, bananas, grapes, figs, dates;
  • cabbage, other cruciferous vegetables (radish, radish, daikon);
  • all legumes (beans, peas, beans);
  • strongly irritating mucous condiments, spices (chili sauce, mustard, adjika, horseradish, vinegar, mayonnaise);
  • onion garlic;
  • mushrooms;
  • any fried foods;
  • most varieties of nuts (whether it is possible to include some of them in the menu, and in what quantities, the gastroenterologist or nutritionist determines individually);
  • energy drinks, alcohol, strong black tea.

Any dishes and products that strongly irritate the digestive tract are prohibited.

The basis of the menu for people who want to get rid of the unpleasant symptoms of pancreatitis, including the taste in the mouth, are:

  • liquid porridge from well-boiled cereals (rice, oatmeal, buckwheat, semolina) in water or vegetable broth (the ratio of cereal and liquid is at least 1: 4, preferably 1: 6);
  • toasted or yesterday's white bread, dry biscuits, biscuits, crackers;
  • small-sized pasta from soft wheat, well-boiled;
  • light vegetable, meat, fish broths, vegetable and cereal soups based on them, puree soups;
  • lean meat (pork, veal), white meat of turkey, chicken, rabbit meat in boiled, steamed, baked (it is advisable to pre-grind the meat into minced meat, cook cutlets, meatballs from it, bitlets);
  • river or low-fat marine a fish (it is prepared in the same way as meat, poultry);
  • dairy and fermented milk products of medium or low fat content (kefir, sour cream, cottage cheese, fermented baked milk, cheese without spices and other additives);
  • vegetables - potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, squash, beets, carrots;
  • egg white (in the form of a steam omelet);
  • any not too sweet and not very sour fruits and berries, peeled and seeds, seeds (primarily pears, apples);
  • weak green or black tea, natural fruit juices diluted with water 1: 3 or 1: 4, homemade compotes without sugar;
  • softened butter, vegetable oils in small amounts.
Diet number 5

Sample menu for the day for a person with pancreatitis and taste in the mouth

In limited quantities, sweets are allowed 2-3 times a week. The menu can include marshmallows, marshmallows, honey. Homemade preserves, jams, marmalade, mousses, jellies are prepared from permitted fruits.

"Golden" rules

If dietary changes and medications prescribed by your doctor, alleviating other common pancreatitis symptoms, do not help get rid of the unpleasant taste in the mouth, resort to additional methods of struggle with him. The "golden rule" of restoring the pancreas - "cold, hunger and rest" is used:

  1. Cold. An ice pack applied to the pancreas can help relieve the intense pain associated with an attack of pancreatitis. This avoids the nausea, diarrhea, and dehydration that lead to a bad taste in the mouth.
  2. Hunger. Any fasting is carried out only with the consent and under the supervision of a gastroenterologist. Often, during an exacerbation of the disease, if the patient neglected the diet, doctors prescribe it for several days in order to "unload" the digestive tract, remove toxins and toxins. Fasting can be "dry" (complete) or "wet" (it is allowed to drink clean non-carbonated water).
  3. Peace. The pancreas is "responsive" to any stress, negative emotional experiences, depression, insomnia. If you cannot independently learn not to respond to external stimuli, you can use sedative preparations or herbs (valerian, mint, motherwort).

Gastroenterologists prefer other methods of treating pancreatitis to fasting, but sometimes they cannot do without it (plus refusal of food - the taste in the mouth quickly disappears)

If fasting is not prescribed for pancreatitis, it is necessary to control the ratio of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the daily diet. The resulting "imbalance" can also provoke an excessive load on the digestive tract, inhibiting the recovery of the pancreas, and ensure the appearance of an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Separate consumption of fats is not recommended - for example, it is better to put butter in ready-made porridge immediately before eating.

Contrary to popular belief, carbohydrates are not only found in sweets. For people with pancreatitis who want to get rid of the taste in the mouth, the main sources of carbohydrates are:

  • cereals;
  • pasta;
  • vegetables;
  • dried bread.

Medications

To cure pancreatitis and, as a result, get rid of an unpleasant taste in the mouth, drugs from several different groups are prescribed:

Enzymes

Ensure the supply of enzymes in the required volume (mainly amylase, protease, lipase), without which it is impossible to fully digest food, break it down into proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

The load on the pancreas is reduced, the inflammatory process is stopped. Such unpleasant accompanying pancreatitis symptoms as attacks of nausea, diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, taste in the mouth disappear.

With an exacerbation of the disease, it is enough to take drugs for 2-3 weeks to relieve symptoms, with chronic pancreatitis, the course of treatment stretches for several months or even years. Most often, a gastroenterologist prescribes:

  • Festal;
  • Creon;
  • Panzinorm;
  • Mezim;
  • Digestal.

Antacids

When the pancreas becomes inflamed, the stomach responds by increasing the secreted volume of hydrochloric acid. It not only provides a sour taste in the mouth, but also corrodes the lining of the esophagus, stomach and intestines, neutralizes the action of the digestive enzymes.

Preparations containing magnesium and aluminum seem to envelop the walls of the digestive tract, protecting the mucous membrane. Additionally, they help get rid of bloating, constipation and flatulence, and stimulate bile secretion. This category includes:

  • Almagel;
  • Maalox;
  • Palmagel;
  • Alumag;
  • Gastricide.

H2 blockers

Drugs that block histamine H2 receptors are always taken simultaneously with antacids. They provide temporary "immunity" to histamine of stomach cells synthesizing hydrochloric acid.

They also have a beneficial effect on the mucous membrane, activating the processes of its regeneration, making it more resistant to external stimuli. The most commonly prescribed drugs from this group are:

  • Ranitidine;
  • Cimetidine;
  • Famotidine.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

A more modern alternative to H2 blockers that have many side effects. They do not "block" the cells themselves, but neutralize the work of a group of enzymes ("proton pump"), without which the synthesis of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is impossible.

They are not able to provoke an attack of pancreatitis, aggravate the problem in the chronic form of the disease, the body cannot adapt to them and "ignore", they are not addictive.

All drugs in this category (Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole) have one active ingredient - benzimidazole.

Antispasmodics

Auxiliary drugs that help relax smooth muscles, relieve pain in inflammation of the pancreas. In the stage of exacerbation of pancreatitis, they are administered intravenously or intramuscularly, people with chronic disease are prescribed a course of taking pills.

This group includes:

  • No-Shpa;
  • Drotaverin;
  • Papaverine;
  • Platyphyllin;
  • Atropine.

Antibiotics

They are necessary for patients who have not paid attention to pancreatitis for a long time or who have neglected the prescriptions of a gastroenterologist.

They are prescribed at such a stage of the disease when the combination of processes of inflammation, intoxication and degeneration of pancreatic tissue led to consequences much more serious than unpleasant taste in the mouth:

  • the formation of cysts;
  • rupture of the pancreatic ducts;
  • stagnation of bile;
  • bacterial infections.

In these cases, drugs are injected:

  • Ceftriaxone;
  • Amoxiclav;
  • Ampiox;
  • Tienam.

Hormonal drugs

They are taken exclusively for inflammation of the pancreas, if it:

  • provoked the production of gastric and pancreatic juice in large volumes (Octreotide);
  • caused by an autoimmune disease (drugs from the group of corticosteroids, such as Prednisolone).

Enterosorbents

In the intestines, food debris accumulates, undigested due to the fact that the pancreas cannot function normally. Pathogenic microflora is actively developing there, fermentation and decay begins.

Smecta, Polysorb, similar drugs provide protection to the mucous membrane, "envelop" toxins and toxins, removing them along with feces.

Antienzyme drugs

They are necessary to suppress the activity of the pancreas during its edema. Introduced intravenously. They have a depressing effect on proteinase and the kallikrein-kinin system (a set of proteins, without which the development of inflammation, the appearance of pain, blood coagulation is impossible).

Mild sedatives

They help to calm the nervous system, get rid of depression, emotional stress. In this state, antispasmodics and analgesics are practically "not perceived". When pancreatitis is prescribed:

  • Glycine;
  • Phenibut;
  • Doxepin.
Pancreatitis treatment

Any medication for patients with pancreatitis is prescribed by a gastroenterologist. He also determines the regimen, the duration of the course of treatment

If you do not take into account the side effects and contraindications, the possibility of combining drugs with each other, you can not only aggravate problems with the pancreas, but also cause harm to other organs.

Folk remedies

Even the reception of "harmless" folk remedies must be coordinated with the attending physician. All the herbs that traditional medicine recommends to patients with pancreatitis work in three ways:

  • relieve pain, spasms, alleviate the general condition;
  • have a beneficial effect on the process of food digestion;
  • protect the mucous membrane of the digestive tract.

For pancreatitis and the accompanying taste in the mouth, use:

  1. Plantain. An effective remedy for a sweet taste in the mouth, provoked by pancreatitis. Squeeze juice from fresh leaves, drink about half a teaspoon each time immediately before eating. The course of treatment is 4 weeks, they are repeated at intervals of 2-3 months. A significant drawback is that fresh plantain does not grow everywhere all year round.
  2. Flowers of immortelle, chamomile, dandelion roots. This mixture helps with excess bile, provoking a bitter taste in the mouth. Dry or fresh ingredients are taken in equal proportions. About three tablespoons of the mixture are poured with a liter of boiling water, insisted for at least 6 hours. Then filter, drink a tablespoon half an hour after each meal.
  3. Grated fresh potatoes. The starch contained in it provides mucous membrane protection from the effects of hydrochloric acid. It is also believed that potatoes are able to quickly stop the inflammatory process, relieve symptoms typical of an exacerbation of pancreatitis (including taste in the mouth). Tubers need to be peeled, grated on the finest grater or chopped in a blender. In the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening, 1.5-2 hours after a meal, take 10-15 g of this gruel. Another way to use potatoes for pancreatitis is to drink freshly squeezed juice in the same way (100-150 ml at a time). The duration of the "course of treatment" in both cases is no more than 3 weeks.
  4. Propolis. Those who practice treatment with folk remedies claim that his alcohol tincture in 3 weeks is able to completely restore the functionality of the pancreas, to destroy the pathogenic microflora, eliminating all the symptoms typical for pancreatitis, including taste in the mouth. But, choosing this method of treatment, you need to take into account that the diet, which gastroenterologists recommend adhering to for pancreatitis, completely excludes any alcohol-containing drinks. Propolis is crushed to a powdery state, two tablespoons are poured in 200 ml of 70% alcohol, left in a dark, warm place for 12-15 days until it completely dissolves. Ready tincture is drunk in the morning, on an empty stomach, adding 30 drops to a glass of water.
  5. Oats, flax seeds. Protect the mucous membrane, promote its regeneration. Raw materials are ground in a coffee grinder to a flour condition. About 80 g is poured into 500 ml of warm (45-50 ° C) water and boiled in a water bath for half an hour, stirring constantly. The prepared gruel is cooled, taken 3-4 times a day at approximately equal intervals of 40-50 g. The "treatment" lasts 3 weeks.
  6. Rosehip, chicory. They have a beneficial effect on the digestive tract as a whole, with pancreatitis they stop the inflammatory process in pancreas, contribute to the elimination of toxins and toxins, help get rid of the unpleasant smack. Approximately 50 g of dry fruits or roots are poured into 300 ml of boiling water, insisted for 1.5 hours. The filtered infusion is drunk 3-4 times a day, 100 ml for half an hour before meals.

Rosehip infusion in folk medicine is an effective remedy against pancreatitis and all its symptoms, including an unpleasant taste in the mouth

Such folk remedies against an unpleasant taste in the mouth, such as chewing coffee beans, mint, parsley, sage, are practically useless for pancreatitis. They, like decoctions of herbs, a solution of soda and salt, which are recommended to rinse your mouth, provide the result for a short time. None of them have any effect on the cause of the taste - pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis is a common disease of the pancreas with many unpleasant symptoms. One of them is a taste in the mouth, which can be eliminated by brushing your teeth, using mouth rinses, and other measures to help you only for a short time.

Cope with the problem will not work if you do not cure the pancreatitis itself. This requires not only a course intake of drugs prescribed by a gastroenterologist, but also strict adherence to the diet. Sometimes the doctor recommends and "auxiliary" folk remedies.
