Pancreatic metastases in cancer

Experts say that among oncological diseases among adults, the presence of a malignant tumor in the pancreas is in sixth place, and has the ability to start metastases to other organs of the human body, so that metastases in the pancreas are quite common and dangerous ailment.

One of the most important organs in the digestive system, doctors call the pancreas.

So, let me remind you that the pancreas is important for the human body in that the enzymes that this organ produces contribute to normal assimilation of fat and carbohydrates from food that a person eats, in addition, this organ affects the decrease in the acidity of the juice produced stomach.

In addition to the previously mentioned good qualities, iron also contributes to the production of hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which in turn affect the maintenance of the required level of plasma sugar.

By studying this article in more detail, you will learn about where metastases can spread in pancreatic cancer, how diagnose the presence of tumor cells in the pancreas, their causes and, most importantly, how to treat metastases in the pancreas iron.

Diagnosing metastases

Doctors openly say that diagnosing the presence of metastases, and various kinds malignant neoplasms, in any organs of the human body, it is quite difficult, and the pancreas iron is no exception.

In order to detect their presence, doctors have to use a large number of different methods.

After studying the patient's plasma, it is possible to detect abnormalities in the level of bilirubin and other blood components.

And when a doctor prescribes such an examination as a fine-needle biopsy, for which it is necessary to take a little tissue, a histologist examines it and makes a diagnosis.

Also, in order to detect metastases, doctors quite often use methods such as:

  • Conducting magnetic resonance imaging of the peritoneum, better known to us as MRI.
  • The use of computed tomography is also likely.
  • They also perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (hereinafter referred to as ERCP).

Despite all the above methods, one of the most popular methods for diagnosing problems pancreas (as well as bile, liver and bile ducts), is an ultrasound tomography.

Carrying out such studies, both ultrasound and computed x-ray tomography, allows you to detect a neoplasm that has a size of about two or three centimeters.

And the use of ERCP is necessary in order to determine the extent to which the spread of the lesion is. bile and pancreatic ducts, with such a place of formation, they expand, and the bile also increases in sizes.

The cause of the appearance of tumor cells

The appearance of metastases in the organ is a consequence of the presence of a tumor that increases in size, as well as a consequence of its transition to stages 3 and 4 of the disease.

But it also happens that pancreatic cancer appears with metastases to the liver.

Spread to the pancreas is quite common in the presence of an oncological disease.

Most often, the pancreas suffers from metastases in the presence of such a diagnosis as stomach cancer. And in the following cases, the gland undergoes metastasis a little less often:

  • With a diagnosis such as sarcoma.
  • If you have melanoma.
  • Also, the gland does not always suffer in the presence of chorionepithelioma.
  • Cancer of the lungs, ovaries and mammary glands.

After conducting a number of studies, scientists say that the defeat of pancreatic metastases in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma is quite common.

Symptoms of the disease

Let me remind you that infection of the gland with metastases occurs quite rarely in the presence of oncology in other organs.

As mentioned above, most often the pancreas suffers when the patient has stomach cancer.

And with sarcoma, melanoma, hepatoma, cancer of the lungs, ovaries and others, metastases are much less likely to affect the organ.

Consider the signs of pancreatic cancer in more detail:

  • The presence of a pain symptom in the stomach area.
  • Appetite problems, namely loss of appetite.
  • A sharp and strong decrease in body weight.
  • In general, the patient feels weak.
  • The presence of anemia in a person.

The spread of tumor cells through human organs occurs already at the later stages of the development of the disease, and if they affect the pancreas, then the patient shows the above symptoms.

More attention should be paid to such a symptom as a pain symptom in the stomach area, because after for some time he becomes stronger and stronger, and at some point the patient is simply not able to ignore.

And in the presence of renal cell carcinoma, metastases attack the gland faster and more often than in other cases.

Pancreatic metastasis therapy

Before starting therapy and choosing a treatment method that is suitable for each individual, the specialist must take into account several factors, namely:

  • The initial type of cancer.
  • How old is this or that patient.
  • What is his state of health at the moment.
  • Where are the metastases localized, and in what quantity.
  • It is very important how the therapy of the patient's primary illness was carried out.

There are several methods that are common and are allowed in the treatment, namely:

  • Operational method of treatment.
  • Carrying out the method of radiotherapy (carried out in conjunction with the operational method).
  • Carrying out a method such as chemotherapy.
  • Carrying out such a method as radiation therapy.

In our time, science does not stand still, and one of the modern and demanded methods can be considered conducting radiosurgery that has a stereotaxic appearance, it is characterized by the use of such an instrument as cyber knife.

This type of surgical intervention does not leave a single incision on the patient's body, and it is performed without the use of anesthesia.

Also important is the fact that the usual surgical intervention for the treatment of metastasis of the gland, in the presence of cancer of the organ itself, usually does not occur.

Also, to obtain regression during surgery, specialists use chemotherapy during therapy.

Treatment in this way lasts a long time, about two months, but it helps to keep cancer cells from growing, and prevents them from spreading throughout the body. For this method, the following medicines are used: "Gemcitabine", "Irinoteka", "Fluorouracil", "Doxorubicin" and much more.

The use of this method makes it possible to make the general condition of a person easier and life longer.

For the treatment of metastases, without a complex of other methods, the use of radiation therapy is impossible, since it can have complications for the patient that accompany the process of destruction of the tumor education.

The use of this method is considered by oncologists to be very effective in the treatment of pancreatic cancer, their opinion is justified by the fact that the cells of this type of tumor are very sensitive to radio emissions.

The use of radiation therapy affects the fact that the size of the neoplasm (having a malignant type) becomes smaller, this happens in 60-70% of sick people, but if metastases have spread throughout the body in large numbers, then this method helps to alleviate symptoms.

This type of treatment doctors call palliative, it is prescribed if the patient has practically no chance of life.

This therapy helps to increase the comfort of the patient's life, he is characterized by the use of strong drugs, which contribute to pain relief, it can also be antidepressants and many other pharmacological drugs.

What is the forecast

In the presence of tumor cells in the pancreas or in pancreatic cancer itself, the prognosis cannot be called pleasant.

If surgery is possible, then for the patient the percentage of death is about ten - fifteen percent, and life for five years has an unfavorable percentage, it is five to ten percent.

But in any case, those who underwent surgery will live longer than those who, for whatever reason, did not undergo surgery.
