The location of the pancreas in the human body

The pancreas plays one of the main roles in the digestive system. It directly delivers gastric juice to the duodenum, which ensures the processing of protein, carbohydrate and fatty foods.

Having identified the location of the pancreas, it is possible to timely establish various violations in the functioning of the organ in question and prevent dangerous consequences.

Where is the organ located

It is believed that if the organ is called the pancreas, therefore, it is located under the stomach.

However, this is not entirely true. This principle is possible only in a situation when the patient is in a horizontal position.

When he is standing, the gland is located at level 1 of the lumbar vertebra. To establish where the organ in question is located, perhaps when you look at a picture of the pancreas. The organ has a head, body, and tail.

Head

The head is the initial section of the organ in question. It is possible to clearly see it, for example, in the process of performing an ultrasound scan.

This section of the pancreas is considered the most extensive and is located on the right side of the 1st and 2nd vertebrae of the lumbar spine. The head is bent towards the bottom, which looks like a hook.

On the back of the neck of the gland there is an oblique notch. Inside it is the superior mesenteric artery and vein, which connect to the spleen just above.

A similar compound is called portal vein in medicine. The head of the pancreas adheres tightly to the duodenum, which bends and forms a loop.

In the middle of the head and the lower part of the duodenum is a kind of gap, inside which is the bile duct.

The right renal artery and vein, the inferior vena cava, are attached to the posterior part of the head. The abdominal aorta is adjacent to the neck of the organ in question.

The anterior part of the head is covered with a sheet of the peritoneum, and inside it is intersected by the base of the transverse colon.

In this area, the iron protrudes slightly into the stuffing box. The small intestine is located near the bottom of the head.

Body

At level 1 of the vertebra, there is another part of the organ in question - the body, which is extremely similar in shape to a prism.

The right side bends in front of itself and up, and the left side down. In this regard, the body has 3 edges, the nearest of them is connected to the leaves of the greater omentum and the colon.

In front of the body, it is possible to find a slight bulge, which is called the omental tubercle. This bulge is located near the lesser gastric curvature.

From the back of the pancreatic body is the abdominal part of the aorta, the left renal vein.

On the left, the kidney is actually close to the body, and in the lower part - parts of the colon and small intestine.

Tail

The section of the pancreas, called the tail, begins behind the abdominal wall and goes to the upper part, deviating slightly to the left.

This section of the pancreas reaches the middle part of the spleen, adjacent to the back of its hilum.

In the lower side of the tail is the splenic flexure of the colon, and on the back is the end of the kidney with the adrenal gland.

At the end of the part of the pancreas under consideration, there is a sphincter, which forms the hepato-renal ampulla at the junction with the biliary tract.

Duct location

Its path stretches along the entire length of the pancreas, which is immersed in the pancreatic parenchyma near its front.

A large number of less paths fall into this main path. Near the right side of the head, the duct is transformed into the 12-duodenum, having previously connected with the biliary tract.

In some, at the top of the head there is 1 auxiliary duct, like others, it flows into the intestine.

During life, the dimensions, as well as the localization of the pancreas, can change. In addition, the functional abilities of the gland also change - after 50 years, the activity of the islets of Langerhans decreases and other cells of the organ in question, which suggests special dietary requirements for people in mature and elderly age.

It should be noted that the gland is formed at 3 weeks of the embryo inside the mother's womb. Then the pancreas looks like an outgrowth on the wall of the embryonic intestine.

The formation of pathways and acini occurs at the end of the 1st trimester of the development of the embryo. In adulthood, the organ in question is considered carefully fixed in the peritoneal region, and in infants it is located slightly higher and for it high mobility.

The pancreas acquires its habitual appearance by about 6-7 years of age.

Directly the anatomical structure and localization of the organ suggest special clinical signs that appear during the period of pathological changes inside the gland.

Symptoms

Each pathology in the organ in question and other organs of the digestive tract can manifest itself with similar symptoms.

Therefore, even a specialist is not able to make a diagnosis without appropriate research.

Manifestations indicating the presence of difficulties with the gland:

  • decreased appetite or loss;
  • dislike for certain products;
  • loss of body weight, wasting;
  • pain in the upper abdominal cavity, in some cases radiating to the back;
  • yellowness of the skin;
  • difficulty with bowel movements, persistent diarrhea or constipation;
  • a change in the structure of feces, where fragments of unprocessed food are noted;
  • unpleasant odor of feces;
  • an increase in temperature indicators;
  • malaise, early fatigue;
  • significant darkening of urine.

Pathologies that are associated with a decrease in the production of enzymes:

  • exacerbation of pancreatitis (inflammation, often associated with swelling);
  • chronic pancreatitis;
  • the formation of diabetes;
  • pancreatic necrosis.

If the above symptoms appear, you will need to immediately find out the doctor's recommendations.

Disorders in the digestive system are eliminated by a highly qualified gastroenterologist, and when diabetes is established, the patient will need the help of an endocrinologist.

Pain in the pancreas

The discomfort manifested as a result of changes within the organ in question is pulling, dull, sharp.

This varies from the severity of the injury, from the involvement of the peritoneal sheets in the disease.

Exacerbation of pancreatitis with edema is characterized by acute, sudden pain, often encircling, which spreads to the upper abdomen, left side and lumbar region.

Due to swelling, there is a bursting in the area of localization of the organ, pressure on the ribs.

In such situations, the use of antispasmodic medications will not give the expected effect.

Unpleasant sensations are somewhat reduced only in a sitting position with the body tilted in front of you and down.

When painful sensations (before they appear), the gag reflex begins, repeated 3-5 times and not in all situations delivering improvement.

The content can be consumed food or bile (with an empty stomach).

Similar symptoms (acute pain, gag reflex) are also observed during exacerbations of osteochondrosis in the lower back, with pathological renal processes.

Ancillary diagnostics help to identify suspicion of adverse symptoms.

With the lumbar form of osteochondrosis, there is discomfort in the vertebrae in the process of probing them, with difficulties with the kidneys - pain increases when tapping on the lower back, with shingles on the skin, there is rash.

The disease is characterized by the absence of the above symptoms. The chronic form of the disease is marked by less severity of discomfort, often manifested due to a deviation from dietary nutrition.

The danger of exacerbations of the disease suggests the appearance of tumors in the organ, including of a malignant nature.

Organ location changes

When examining the position of the pancreas under a microscope, it is noticeable that it changes taking into account the change in the localization of the trunk.

The gland assumes the presence of lobules in itself. In the scar tissue, ducts, nerves and vessels are located between the lobules.

Functionally, the body under consideration is divided into the following parts:

  • Endocrine. The islets of Langerhans suggest the presence of cells called insulin cells. They produce hormonal components that help regulate carbohydrate metabolism. They increase and decrease sugar content as needed. In addition, the production of interstitial peptide, polypeptide and somatostatin is carried out internally.
  • Exocrine. It has excretory tracts and pancreatic acini. Here, under the influence of enzymes, the breakdown of fatty, protein and carbohydrate foods is carried out. The split components are activated in the intestinal space. This is required to protect against lesions of the gland.

To establish the exact location of the gland, possibly through tomography or ultrasound examination.

When the pancreas is normal, the echo waves are distributed evenly.

For palpation of the organ in question, it is required to put the patient in a horizontal position. In addition, bowel cleansing is required.

Treatment

The therapeutic technique of inflammatory phenomena varies from the degree and stage of the pathological process.

Complex therapy of the disease is recommended, which includes adherence to a strict dietary diet.

  • Chronic and acute pancreatitis requires a diet. It is required to completely remove fatty, spicy and salty foods from the menu, exclude smoked, canned food and sweets. It is optimal to fast for a couple of days - this will make it possible to unload the organ in question and improve the patient's well-being.
  • Saturate the menu with hydrocarbonate mineral waters. Consistent consumption helps to improve metabolic processes and reduce gastric acidity.
  • Diet during pancreatic therapy involves the intake of liquid dishes that normalize the production of enzymes.
  • In the menu of patients suffering from pancreatitis, it is possible to include soups, cereals, lean meat or fish products, steamed vegetables, potato dishes, zucchini or cauliflower.
  • When treating the disease, products such as black bread, various canned foods are completely excluded from the patient's diet. products and sausages, various fatty meats, semi-finished products, milk, salted and sweet, spices, beans and vegetable fats.

Pancreatitis sufferers need to monitor the daily calorie intake of their own diet.

A large amount of calories significantly increases the stress on the organ in question and causes increased production of enzymes within the human body, which is extremely negative in the treatment of inflammation. It is optimal to choose a menu in which there is no more than 700 calories. in a day.

The pancreas is an important organ in the gastrointestinal tract. Functional dysfunctions are very common. It is necessary to seek medical help in a timely manner.
