Reactive changes in the pancreas in a child

The number of people who suffer from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract is growing every year. According to statistics, every third person has problems with the digestive system. Unfortunately, this statistic also includes children. The pancreas often suffers. This important organ is "responsible" for the production of insulin and the secretion of pancreatic fluid, which is necessary for proper digestion.

Reactive changes in the pancreas are often diagnosed in children and adolescents. The problem lies in the fact that this particular category is very fond of "junk" food, such as crackers, chips, soda and so on. However, reactive changes are not always the result of a violation of the diet. Sometimes they appear against the background of antibiotic therapy, other pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as damage to organs localized in the abdominal cavity.

Any malfunction in the digestive system is already a pathology. It is important to know when this is only a minor deviation from the norm, and when medical intervention is required. If the child begins to complain of pain in the left side or in the epigastrium, it is imperative to show it to the attending physician.

Diagnosis of pathology is based on the use of laboratory and instrumental techniques. Ultrasound is of the greatest diagnostic value. It allows you to establish the degree of development of the pathology, as well as how much reactive changes have affected the tissues of the pancreas.

A specialized specialist who deals with the treatment of such diseases is a gastroenterologist. The therapy plan will be based, first of all, on what triggered the reactive changes in the cells of the gland. If this is another gastrointestinal disease, it is also treated. If there are errors in nutrition, then the doctor prescribes a special diet that will help normalize the functioning of the digestive system as a whole. Symptomatic therapy is also carried out. Medicines are prescribed to help relieve spasms, eliminate pain, nausea, and more.

Why do reactive changes develop in the pancreas?

Reactive changes in the pancreas are an "indicator" that indicates the presence of another disease. But they are also accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. The pancreas increases in size, swells. All this is accompanied by a rather pronounced pain syndrome, nausea, vomiting. But still, more often such a pathology is completely asymptomatic - its presence is detected during ultrasound diagnostics.

The main reasons that provoke the appearance of reactive changes:

  • predisposition at the genetic level. Often, pathology is hereditary;
  • allergic reaction;
  • food poisoning;
  • malfunction of the pancreas, which led to a violation of the release of enzymes. More often, this condition is observed due to anomalies in the structure of the organ (congenital);
  • frequent colds and diseases of an infectious nature. Sometimes it is enough for a small child to just catch a cold for reactive changes in the pancreas to begin to appear;
  • long-term use of potent antibacterial agents;
  • regular use of "harmful" food products - sweeteners, crackers, flavor enhancers, chips, carbonated water and others;
  • diseases of the digestive tract: gastritis, cholecystitis, hepatitis, peptic ulcer, colitis and others.

Traumatization of organs localized in the abdominal cavity can also provoke reactive changes. This can happen as a result of a blow to the abdomen or the fall of the child. It is for this reason that it is recommended that after an injury be sure to visit your attending physician for an examination.

Stages of development of changes in the pancreas

For the doctor to make an accurate diagnosis, it is not enough for him to use only the data of ultrasound diagnostics. But this instrumental technique makes it possible to establish the type of changes in the gland, which is a very important diagnostic criterion. In total, there are three stages in the development of pathology:

  1. Minor diffuse changes in the parenchyma. This suggests that the changes affected the entire organ, and not just some specific part of it. The distribution is even. During the diagnosis, a slight change in echogenicity is determined. The gland itself looks a little lighter than usual. Such changes are not accompanied by severe symptoms and do not affect the quality of life. The patient is not worried about anything.
  2. Moderate diffuse changes. The echo density of the gland changes - it is increased in all parameters. The structure of the organ is heterogeneous, somewhat lighter than it should be. This condition is accompanied by certain symptoms - discomfort, nausea, minor pain in the epigastric region.
  3. Pronounced diffuse changes. The ultrasound picture is very bright - the entire gland is hyperechoic, much lighter than it should be normal, and white echo-positive areas are marked on it. Their presence indicates that scars and zones of fibrosis have formed in the affected organ. The clinical picture is very pronounced. The child becomes lethargic, apathetic, capricious. Losing weight. All this is accompanied by symptoms of gastrointestinal tract disruption - nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain appear, and stool changes.

To confirm the presence of pathology, the child will also need to undergo laboratory diagnostics. Based on the data obtained, the doctor will make an accurate diagnosis and will be able to indicate the reason that triggered the development of reactive changes in the pancreas.

What symptoms occur when there are reactive changes in the gland?

Indirect signs of the presence of reactive changes in the organ are very similar to the symptoms of many diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In a baby, it is more difficult to determine the presence of a pathological condition, since he cannot say what hurts him or what worries him. Such children are lethargic, capricious, cry and lose their appetite.

In older children, the clinical picture is as follows:

  • painful sensations in the upper abdomen;
  • nausea and vomiting. After the child vomits, it does not feel better;
  • bloating;
  • the skin becomes jaundiced;
  • the color of biological secretions changes - the urine becomes darker, and the feces are light;
  • body temperature rises to 38-38.5 ° С;
  • the tongue is coated with a white or yellowish coating;
  • diarrhea. The consistency of feces is watery. If reactive changes have been present for a long time, then diarrhea can be replaced by constipation;
  • dry mouth;
  • regular belching;
  • decreased appetite. The child can refuse even those foodstuffs that he loved very much before;
  • increased fatigue and moodiness.

In the presence of such a clinical picture, it is recommended to immediately visit a medical institution. It is unacceptable to engage in self-diagnosis and self-medication, since you can only provoke a deterioration in the general condition of the child.

Diagnostics

Diagnostics involves the use of both instrumental and laboratory techniques. Signs of diffuse changes can be found on ultrasound of the abdominal organs. The norm of the size of the gland is determined by the doctor according to special tables. They are compiled taking into account several important parameters - the weight of the child, his gender and age. A CT scan may be needed to get more information about the condition of the pancreas.

Additional diagnostic methods:

  • general blood test - allows you to determine the presence of foci of inflammation in the child's body;
  • blood chemistry;
  • general urine analysis;
  • endoscopic examination of the duodenum.

Based on the data obtained, the final diagnosis is made, and then the most effective treatment plan is developed.

Methods for treating reactive changes in the pancreas

Treatment of pathology is carried out in three directions at once - elimination of the underlying disease, relief of unpleasant symptoms and diet therapy. Initial and moderate changes usually do not require special therapy. Everything returns to normal immediately after the treatment of the main ailment of the gastrointestinal tract, which entailed a failure in the functioning of the gland, is carried out.

If a child has severe diffuse changes, he is urgently hospitalized. He will be in the hospital under the constant supervision of the attending physician. For therapy, apply:

  • drugs that suppress gastric acid secretion;
  • medicines that activate the process of producing enzymes;
  • antispasmodics. This group of drugs is necessary not only to relieve pain, but also to normalize the outflow of pancreatic juice;
  • glucose solution. The main purpose of its application is the normalization and maintenance of the water-salt balance at the required level.

For a child to recover, it is important that he follows a diet. Parents should make sure that there are no foods in his menu that can provoke an exacerbation. The following are completely excluded from the diet:

  • cabbage;
  • fatty;
  • flour;
  • salty;
  • spicy;
  • ice cream;
  • smoked meats;
  • carbonated drinks;
  • mushrooms;
  • canned foods.

The child is allowed to eat the following foods:

  • lean meat;
  • tea without sugar;
  • mashed porridge;
  • mashed potatoes;
  • vegetable soups;
  • lean fish;
  • dairy products;
  • vegetables and fruits can be consumed 7 days after the acute phase of the pathological condition ends.

There is recommended in small portions and at intervals of at least 4 hours. Food is either boiled or steamed. Wipe them before using them. The food must be warm.

Preventive actions

It is possible to prevent the development of problems with the digestive system if the child is provided with adequate nutrition and adherence to the regimen. It is also equally important to timely treat infectious and inflammatory diseases that can provoke the development of reactive changes in the pancreas.

Prevention:

  • it is important not to overfeed the child;
  • minimize the consumption of sweet flour products;
  • do not abuse sweet carbonated drinks;
  • it is recommended to steam or cook foods;
  • exclude crackers, chips and other harmful products;
  • balance the child's diet. It must contain all the substances that are necessary for the full development of the child's body;
  • avoid injury;
  • do not use foods that have almost expired.

If you adhere to these simple recommendations, you can minimize the risk of reactive changes in the pancreas.
