Why does the stool change in newborns

Parents face a problem when their child develops loose green stools.

To correctly assess the situation, it is important to remember the existing norms of the stool of children in the first 12 months of their life. Very often, green feces are considered the norm for a newborn.

The nature of feces can constantly change in the first year of a baby's life.

Their color depends on:

  • How the baby is feeding (breastfeeding or formula)
  • Breastfeeding mother's menu (if the baby feeds on breast milk)
  • Change of milk formula or its initial introduction
  • Your baby's digestive system is not fully mature
  • Other abnormalities related to the health of the child

The stool of a newborn baby can only be assessed a few weeks after birth. At this time, it takes on color and is considered the norm.

For the first two weeks, the stool appears as black or dark green mucus. IT is called meconium. It is odorless and is considered the norm.

Stool for babies on HB and its features

The stool of infants feeding on mother's milk becomes yellow, yellow-green and dark brown. Green feces may be present.

The shades of these colors and the nature of the grainy impurities may vary. Feces look like thick sour cream or a gruel structure.

Sometimes there is a sour smell, and the feces acquire a liquid and foamy structure. Acts of defecation in infants up to 1.5 months of age are 4-15 times during the day and become less frequent as they grow.

With the correct development of the child, at 3 months, this number should vary from 4 to 6 times per day. Sometimes bowel movements can be only 1 time per day.

The color of the stool depends on the mother's hormones and is often green. Enzymes are found in breast milk.

The state of the intestines of the newborn and the lack of enzymes in the child's body, associated with their immaturity, also affect.

Stool discoloration can occur as a result of its oxidation when exposed to oxygen in the air.

The color of the stool depends on the nutritional characteristics of the nursing mother and on the process of assimilation of all nutrients by the baby.

To regulate normal bowel movements in a baby, a nursing mother must adhere to the following dietary rules:

  • Include lean meats, poultry and fish in your diet. Eat them boiled.
  • In addition to meat protein, dairy products (cottage cheese, cheese) should be included. Since whole cow's milk can cause allergic reactions in infants in the first year of life, it is recommended to replace this product with fermented milk and yoghurts.
  • Food should contain a lot of dietary fiber in the form of vegetables and fruits. Exceptions are orange and red fruits and berries.
  • Eliminate all products that provoke fermentation. They are able to cause frothy feces in the baby. Do not eat confectionery, pickles, pickles, smoked products, grapes, as well as anything sweet.
  • Limit the consumption of foods that can cause allergies. These are strawberries, chocolate, citrus fruits, chicken and tomatoes.

Chair for GV

In a bottle-fed newborn, the stool is much denser in consistency. If liquid feces have appeared, then this cannot be the norm.

The amount of emptying per day is 1-2 times, sometimes 1 time in two days. The color can be either yellow or brown, very similar to the feces of an adult. The smell is pungent.

If the milk formula has changed, the stool may be thin and slightly green. But this is extremely rare.

Green diarrhea

The appearance of green and foamy stools in infants, with an unpleasant sour odor, is characterized by a lack of breast milk from the posterior chamber. It has a fatter structure and a high calorie content.

Such milk contains all the necessary enzymes for the assimilation of lactose. What needs to be done in this case:

  • Green stools can form if a baby has difficulty sucking on one breast and is in a hurry to change it to another. It is important to allow the baby to receive milk from the back chamber.
  • To form milk in the rear chamber, feed on demand. Feeding by the hour will not provide this result and will provoke green stools.
  • Food for up to 6 months should be exclusively breastfeeding, without the addition of water and juices. This will prevent the stool from becoming green.
  • Ensure that the baby is in the correct position at the time of feeding, otherwise he will abandon the breast, which will cause green feces.
  • Feeding is done in silence, and mom should be well fed. This will provide adequate nutrition. The feces will not be green.

When is treatment needed

  • If the baby's stool has become frequent, liquid and exudes an unpleasant odor. When lactose is deficient, there is often a sour smell. With intestinal infections, there is a putrid and pungent odor. The presence of a viral infection will be indicated by frequent bowel movements - up to 12 times a day.
  • Increased body temperature of the newborn.
  • If the stool is foamy, green, with profuse mucous discharge, rapid, sometimes with inclusions of blood. At this time, the baby has anxiety, loss of appetite, insomnia. These symptoms accompany allergies and bacteria in the intestines.
  • Profuse regurgitation and vomiting may occur. Weight loss or underweight is another sign, since in the first year of life, the crumbs very carefully monitor their weight gain. Any deviations from the norm may indicate violations.

Pathological diarrhea

But if the green stool in a baby is long-lasting, its frequency is growing rapidly, and the baby himself is capricious, eats poorly and almost does not sleep, this is obvious diarrhea. What can cause it?

  • Infection. Green feces can provoke pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms. Additional symptoms include vomiting, high body temperature, weakness, and malaise.
  • The presence of dysbiosis. Green stools are accompanied by colic, bloating, flatulence, and flatulence. Violation of the state in the intestinal microflora leads to malfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Viral infections. Green feces can occur with a viral or respiratory infection. The baby's immunity is very unstable and not fully strengthened. Motherfed babies are more protected because important antibodies are present in breast milk. If the crumbs are on the formula, no matter how high-quality the milk formula is, it will not be able to provide such protection.
  • The presence of allergies. Green stools can be the result of an allergic reaction. It depends on the nature of the mother's diet, formula milk or reaction to medications.

If the baby has green feces, then it is important to contact the pediatrician with this problem. He will establish the cause of this phenomenon and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Such a process is not always a pathology, so you cannot self-medicate, because the baby's health is in the hands of caring parents who are responsible for it.
