Allergy to ragweed is one of the most common allergic reactions to ragweed.

ragweed allergy

Ragweed is a well-known weed that grows in all corners of the globe and it is quite difficult to deal with it, therefore in many countries ragweed is considered especially dangerous plant.

In order for an allergy to ragweed pollen to arise, it is enough just to stand next to it or touch it a plant during the flowering period, since ragweed pollen can provoke the development of moderate hay fever severity. Often, in patients with hypersensitivity, a flowering plant can cause a strong rejection reaction, which requires emergency hospitalization.

Reasons for the development of allergies

During the period of activity, ragweed emits a lot of pollen, carried by the wind over fairly long distances and capable of getting into the living quarters. In contact with the mucous membrane and skin in people with hypersensitivity, an acute allergy to ragweed pollen develops.

Of no small importance is the patient's allergic predisposition and the presence of chronic diseases, especially disorders of the functionality of the endocrine system.

An allergic reaction to ragweed can appear in patients of different age categories, but it is especially difficult in young children. It is important to take into account that if you are allergic to this plant, it is necessary to treat the disease in a timely manner, since it can go into a chronic course and with various complications.

Allergy symptoms

Symptoms of ragweed pollen allergy do not differ from common hay fever (a negative reaction to flowering plants and trees). The most typical are:

  • swelling, hyperemia of the eyelids and lacrimation;
  • frequent sneezing, cough without phlegm, allergic rhinitis and discomfort in the larynx (scratching, soreness, difficulty swallowing);
  • there is hyperemia of the skin with the appearance of a small-point rash and accompanied by unbearable itching;
  • wheezing may occur, and in severe cases, suffocation may develop;
  • hyperthermia, excruciating headache;
  • Sometimes ragweed allergy can have secondary symptoms, manifested by irritability, depression, poor appetite and restless sleep.

In the presence of such symptoms, especially during the flowering of ragweed, it is necessary to carry out adequate treatment, having previously sought medical advice.

The course of the disease in children

Allergic diseases occur in almost every third child. The reasons for this are poor ecology, as well as the low quality of food products, to which many dyes and preservatives are added, which have a significant impact on the child's immune system. The most dangerous time is when grasses and trees bloom. It is during this period that an allergy to ragweed in children is most often observed, with all the ensuing consequences.

Symptoms of an allergy to ragweed in a child are manifested by irritations of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, manifested by pain when swallowing, itching, redness of the tonsils. Sometimes the body temperature may rise to subfebrile levels, although, as a rule, an allergy to ragweed in children proceeds with a normal temperature.

Treatment of children with drug therapy can be started only after the diagnosis has been clarified and the allergen has been determined. In all cases, nutritional adjustments are required in order to remove highly allergenic foods (chocolate, eggs, whole milk, citrus fruits, berries, etc.) from the child's diet. For this, a special hypoallergenic diet is prescribed, developed for each child individually, in accordance with the age category and the severity of symptoms.

Allergy relief medication

Treatment of allergic manifestations to ragweed is carried out according to the scheme usual for all types of this disease. In this case, drugs of the following groups are most often used:

Antihistamines

  • Tavegil, Aleron;
  • Loratadin, Claritin;
  • Zyrtec, Allegra;
  • Fexofenadine, Levocetirizine;
  • Suprastin, Cetirizin, Ksizal, etc.
Tavegil and Aleron

These medicines actively relieve swelling and itching.

Eye drops

  • Ketotifen fumarate, Patanol;
  • Azelastine, Advocate;
  • Olopatadin, Optivar.

Eye drops effectively relieve conjunctivitis.

Hormonal drugs

  • Prednisolone, Hydrocortisone;
  • ointment Locoid, Dermovate, Lorinden, etc.

With severe development from an allergy to ragweed, hormonal preparations for intravenous and intramuscular administration are used, however it should be borne in mind that glucocorticosteroids cannot be used for long-term treatment, since these drugs can cause a number of serious complications.

Performing specific immunotherapy (SIT)

Another method of therapy is SIT. This technique can effectively get rid of ragweed allergy. However, with this technique, patience is required, since the treatment is carried out for a long time. In addition, the method of performing SIT involves the introduction of a dosed allergen - ragweed pollen - to the patient so that the immune system does not reject it in the future. This treatment is quite effective and allows you to achieve a stable remission. It must be remembered that the earlier the treatment begins, the less media will be applied to the patient's body.

Treatment with folk recipes

Along with drug therapy, folk remedies can effectively reduce the signs of an allergic reaction to ragweed. The following recipes are most commonly used:

  • 10 bunches of fresh celery must be cranked with a meat grinder, and then squeezed out all the juice and mixed with 2 tbsp. spoons of honey. In this way, you can treat allergic symptoms to ragweed by taking the resulting medicine 3 r. during the day for 3 tbsp. spoons before meals;
  • 1 tbsp. l. nettle powder should be poured with 1 tbsp. water and boil for at least 10-15 minutes. The broth is taken in 1 tbsp. spoon 5-6 times during the day;
  • you need to take 1 tsp. spoon of root (crushed) and cumin herb, pouring them with 1 tbsp. water and keep on fire for 10 minutes, then leave to infuse for 30 minutes. The tool is taken 3 times a day, 70 ml;
  • ragweed allergy can be treated with pine needles that are pre-ground in a blender. Five tbsp. tablespoons of the resulting mixture is mixed with 2 tbsp. l. ground rose hips and onion husks, and then pour 1 liter. water. The mixture is kept on fire for 10 minutes. It is recommended to treat the patient with this broth until the allergic manifestations to ragweed completely disappear.

It is important to note that treatment with folk recipes should be carried out in combination with traditional therapy and a special diet in order to avoid cross-allergic reaction to ragweed. Otherwise, it may not lead to a positive result.

Recommended diet

Diet plays an important role in the treatment of allergies, since almost all patients with this form of the disease may have a cross-allergic reaction to ragweed.

Cross-allergies are often triggered by food that contains proteins similar to pollen. Proper nutrition with the development of an allergy to ragweed flowering is necessary so that the cross-reaction does not complicate the treatment of the disease. Good results are shown by fasting, which helps to reduce allergic symptoms, improve the functionality of the body. In addition, cross-reaction is not possible during fasting.

The list of recommended and undesirable products with a clear allergic severity to ragweed includes:

RECOMMENDED FOR USE FORBIDDEN TO USE
Dairy products and fermented milk products Alcohol
Boiled potatoes Smoked meats
Cereals (pearl barley, buckwheat, rice, millet, barley groats) Chocolate
You can eat veal, chicken, lean beef Halva and sugar should not be consumed

Legumes Foods with a high salt content
Mineral water, coffee drink, green tea Certain types of herbs (chamomile, coltsfoot, calendula)
Hard varieties of pasta Eggs, seeds
Soups Honey

Prophylaxis

It should be borne in mind that the flowering of a plant is a seasonal factor, therefore it is important to observe all preventive measures during this period of time to prevent negative symptoms.

  1. It is recommended to avoid accumulation of ragweed thickets, especially in high temperatures and windy conditions. To protect the room where the allergic person lives, you need to use a special mesh installed on the window.
  2. It is important to carry out timely wet processing of the room and take water procedures more often. In addition, special attention should be paid to pets (cats and dogs). Animals can bring ragweed pollen on their fur, so they should be washed immediately after a walk.
  3. When allergens are active, chemical treatment is not recommended. In addition, at the peak of allergic danger, it is necessary to exclude the use of herbal preparations. In some situations, they can aggravate allergic symptoms and cause unpleasant complications.
