Onychomycosis is an insidious, difficult to treat disease, for which many pharmaceuticals have been created. Antimycotic drops from nail fungus are an effective effective drug at any stage of the disease, but with an advanced form, they should be used in conjunction with systemic medicines.

The effectiveness of drops in the fight against onychomycosis
Local drugs can cope with onychomycosis only if the pathological process is at an early stage. Therefore, when the first signs of the disease appear, it is advisable to consult a specialist as early as possible. In this case, external drugs for treatment will be sufficient.
Drops prescribed for toenail and toenail fungus contain, in fact, two substances - an antimycotic agent and a solvent (oil, alcohol and / or water). Due to the liquid substance, they can rightfully be considered more effective than other local fungicidal preparations - ointments, creams and gels. What is the reason for this?
Drops are easier to distribute over the treated surface, they are fully and faster absorbed into the thickness of the nail without losing their medicinal qualities. Small structural elements of the preparation are able to penetrate into the most inaccessible places of the nail fold, providing a persistent antifungal effect.
Of course, the quality of treatment directly depends on the constituent components of the drops, adherence to the therapy regimen and the neglect of the pathological process. Therefore, this drug should not be used on its own, without medical supervision.
Operating principle
Drops for nail fungus work in the following areas:
- Fungicidal. The drug destroys pathogenic microflora at the cellular level, interfering with the synthesis of ergosterol.
- Fungistatic. The tool blocks the reproduction and spread of onychomycosis pathogens.
The death of pathogens leads to the elimination of inflammation, mitigation of symptoms of infection and a gradual recovery of the patient. This is not to say that this process will take place very quickly. Often, it takes at least 6 months to fight nail and skin mycoses.
The drug, applied to the foci of the disease, is absorbed into the thickness of the nail, where its concentration is gradually created - dangerous for the life of bacteria and fungi. This is the reason for the slow effect of local antimycotics.
Important! Up to 6% of the drug can enter the human systemic circulation, which causes the development of side effects on the drug. Its decay products leave the body through the urinary system and liver.
Review of popular drops (instructions, prices)
Exoderil. The active ingredient is naftifine. The drug destroys all known types of fungi - dermatophytes, moldy and yeast-like. Drops are applied once a day on pre-steamed nail plates, preferably at night. The course of treatment depends on the stage of onychomycosis.
Exoderil is well tolerated by patients. Side effects on its use are extremely rare. They usually appear in the form of local reactions - redness, burning and peeling of the skin. If these symptoms occur, it is not necessary to refuse therapy with Exoderil.
The cost of drops in Russia is 560 rubles per bottle of 10 ml, in Ukraine - 170 hryvnia.
Mycosan. The active ingredients - filtrate of rye enzymes and pentylene glycol - perfectly penetrate deep into the nail, destroying the infection and at the same time strengthening its structure. As a result, the plate stops exfoliating and acquires a healthy appearance. On the surface of the roller, the preparation forms a protective film, which prevents the penetration of oxygen into the interior, as a result of which the fungus dies.
Mycosan is applied to the affected tissues 2 times a day for 4 weeks. The duration of treatment is determined by the stage of onychomycosis. The cost of drops is 830 rubles in Russia and 480 hryvnia in Ukraine.
Candide. The active ingredient is clotrimazole. The drug has a wide spectrum of activity against the causative agents of the nail fungus. The tool is excellently tolerated, so it is allowed among young patients and pregnant women.
Nails affected by onychomycosis are treated with Candide drops 3 times a day. The course of treatment is continued until the fungal infection is completely eliminated and another 14 days after the final recovery with a prophylactic purpose.
In Russia, a bottle of drops with a volume of 15 ml will cost the buyer 350 rubles, in Ukraine - 160 hryvnia.
Terbinafine. Antifungal drops based on terbinafine hydrochloride. In the pharmacy, they can also be purchased under the name - Lamisil, Binafin, Mikoterbin. They are all structural analogs of each other. The drug is effective against yeast-like and moldy fungi.
Terbinafine is applied to clean and dry nail plates 2 times a day. The course of treatment lasts on average 6 months. The price for a 20 ml bottle is 200 rubles in Russian pharmacies and 55 hryvnia in Ukrainian.
Clotrimazole. A drug with an active substance of the same name. It actively destroys the cell membranes of the causative agents of fungal infection, preventing their division, reproduction and recovery. This leads to the inevitable death of the pathogenic flora. Clotrimazole successfully fights dermatophytes, yeasts and molds.
Drops are applied to the foci of onychomycosis 2-3 times a day for 4 weeks. The duration of treatment depends on the neglect of the pathological process. The first signs of improvement can be seen by the 14th day of using the drug.
Clotrimazole solution is relatively inexpensive: the cost of a 15 ml bottle is 170 rubles in Russia and 19 hryvnia in Ukraine.
Lotseril. The active ingredient is amorolfine. Antifungal drug that destroys onychomycosis pathogens on the hands and feet. Drops cope with the disease on their own if the area of the nail lesion does not exceed 60% of the total surface.
Lotseril is applied to dry and clean plates, previously defatted with an alcohol solution, with a thin layer 1 time in 3 days. The recommended course of treatment for onychomycosis of the hands is 6 months, of the legs - up to one year.
The cost of a 5 ml bottle of drops is 2300 rubles in Russia and 1100 hryvnia in Ukraine.
Bifonazole (Mycospore). The active ingredient has the same name - bifonazole. In pharmacies, its structural analogue is more often found - Mikospor. The drug is effective against all known types of fungi.
Drops are applied 2 times a day to the foci of onychomycosis, if the disease is projected on the legs, and once a day - with a pathological process on the nails of the hands. The course of treatment depends on the severity of the infection.
Bifonazole is considered the cheapest drug among those listed above - the cost of a 15 ml bottle is only 100 rubles in Russia and 27 hryvnia in Ukraine. Unfortunately, this remedy is rarely found on sale, so it can be replaced with Mikospor drops - they will cost the buyer several times more.
Cyclopirox (Batrafen). The drug has an active substance of the same name - ciclopirox. It is active against yeast-like and moldy fungi, as well as strains of some bacteria.
Drops are applied to the foci of onychomycosis according to a strict scheme: 1st month of treatment - once every 2 days, starting from the 2nd month - every 3 days, from the 3rd month - once a week. The recommended course of therapy is six months.
The price for Cyclopirox (15 ml bottle) in Russia is 260 rubles, in Ukraine - 78 hryvnia. Since the drug is rarely found on the market, it can be replaced with a structural analogue of Batrafen, however, it will cost the buyer almost 10 times more.
Micostop. Drops based on lactic acid, lavender and rosemary essential oils, vitamin PP. They have an antifungal effect, but are effective only at an early stage of onychomycosis or for prophylactic purposes.
Mikostop is applied to the foci of infection, one drop in the morning and in the evening for 8 weeks. The duration of therapy depends on the rate of regrowth of healthy nail tissue.
The price of the drug in Russia is 256 rubles, in Ukraine - 89 hryvnia.

When choosing drops from nail fungus, it is not enough to focus only on cost. The spectrum of action of various antimycotics may be different, therefore, a doctor should prescribe them, taking into account the causative agent of the disease.
Preparing to use drops
When using external drugs for onychomycosis, it is important to follow the recommendations listed below:
- A special file is usually sold with antifungal drops, with which you can easily clean the nail plates from the excess stratum corneum after preliminary steaming. This must be done carefully so as not to damage nearby healthy tissue and not spread the infection. Also, do not use this nail file that is not affected by the disease.
- After completing the so-called manicure, the nail plates are additionally degreased with a cotton swab dipped in an alcohol solution.

- Apply drops on clean and dry nails using a special spatula supplied with the kit or a dropper bottle. Then the product is gently rubbed into the plate. You need to wait about 5 minutes for it to be completely absorbed by its tissues.
- Close the bottle and store in a dark place until the next treatment.
Which drops are most effective?
The best and most effective fungal drops (regardless of whether they are expensive or not), should have the following therapeutic characteristics:
- Destroy pathogenic microflora and disinfect cells affected by infection.
- Prevent the spread of the disease to adjacent tissues.
Only such a formula, combining fungicidal and fungistatic effects, can rightfully be considered the most effective.
Preparations based on the following active ingredients meet exactly these requirements:
- naftifine;
- amorolfine;
- imidazole;
- terbinafine.
Preparations based on these components are considered the most effective in dermatology.
What drops can be used for both toenail fungus and toenail fungus?
Modern antimycotic drugs give excellent results in the localization of onychomycosis on any part of the body - both on the hands and on the legs. Drops have no fundamental differences in application in these areas. The main thing is to choose a really suitable drug, since the effectiveness of the therapy depends only on its constituent components.
Antifungal drops during pregnancy and for children
Childhood, pregnancy and lactation often become contraindications to the appointment of antimycotic drugs. But there are exceptions to the rule. For convenience, we will consider this issue in the table.

| Drug name | Pregnancy | Breast-feeding | Children |
|---|---|---|---|
| TERBINAFIN | Allowed, except for the 1st trimester. | At the discretion of the attending physician. | Can be used at any age. |

| CYCLOPYROX | — | — | Can. |
| CLOTRIMAZOLE | — | — | Allowed. |
It is obvious from the table that most drops from nail fungus are contraindicated for expectant and nursing mothers, therefore, in such a crucial period, they are recommended pay attention to careful measures to prevent the disease and traditional medicine - baths, lotions, provided that they also do not have restrictions on application.
As for childhood, local antimycotics are usually allowed for young patients, but under the strict supervision of a physician.
Contraindications
All drops from onychomycosis have three main restrictions on use:
- Individual hypersensitivity to the drug. An allergic reaction to the drug makes its further use impossible.
- Childhood. In this case, contraindications are strictly individual in nature. Most local antimycotics are prohibited for very young patients and children with a tendency to allergies.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Any annotation to the drops from the nail fungus indicates that the use of the medication can be justified if the intended benefit to the woman is higher than the potential risk to the child.
It is also contraindicated to be treated with external antimycotics in the presence of open wound surfaces and purulent discharge.
The listed restrictions indicate that the drops from the fungus are by no means a cosmetic product, but a serious medication, the choice of which must be approached with responsibility.
Side effects
With topical application of antimycotic drops, the following undesirable reactions most often develop:
- itching, burning;
- redness, swelling;

- physical discomfort;
- peeling, dry skin.
These symptoms can cause reversible side effects that go away on their own without the use of any supportive measures. Less often, they signal an allergy - in this case, further drug therapy is contraindicated.
Can a neglected fungus be cured with drops?
Unfortunately, with an old infection, local antimycotics are unable to cope with the disease. Therefore, if the drug does not have the proper therapeutic effect, the doctor resorts to prescribing systemic medications - tablets or capsules.
At the same time, drops from the fungus continue to be applied to the foci of onychomycosis in the same way. Oral medications in this case will speed up the healing process from the inside.
The use of drops for the prevention of onychomycosis
Even careful hygiene does not always guarantee that a person will not get infected with nail fungus. The disease awaits everywhere, the risk group includes people who often visit public showers, fitness clubs, saunas, etc. In addition, the infection can be picked up without leaving home, for example, if one of the family members suffers from pathology.
In order not to become infected with onychomycosis, it is recommended to use local antimycotics and antifungal drops, they are the best fit for this purpose. Most often, the use of inexpensive drugs is recommended:
- Clotrimazole;
- Exoderil;
- Mycostop;
- Mycospore.
For prevention, they are applied before and after visiting public places and for several more days. Drops, as in the treatment, are rubbed into the surface of the nail in the same way, leaving until completely absorbed.
What is better varnish or drops from the fungus?
Both forms of antimycotics are intended for topical treatment. They have their own advantages and disadvantages, but, as a rule, they are based on the same active components, which means that there is no fundamental difference in work.
It is believed that antifungal drops quickly and fully penetrate deep into the thickness of the nail, where they have the necessary therapeutic effect. But at the same time, they must be applied at least once a day without a pass, otherwise, the result of the treatment will worsen.
Onychomycosis varnish forms a protective film on the surface of the nail, which prevents the penetration of infection and prolongs the activity of the drug. Its active ingredients also enter the nail and kill the fungus. It is enough to carry out processing once every 3 days, which is much more convenient for a busy person. In addition, there are special decorative varnishes with a healing effect that can hide the symptoms of the disease.
Where to stop the choice is up to the patient to decide. But for this you need to consult a doctor.
Is it possible to pick up drops from the fungus on your own?
Most likely yes, since the choice will not turn into difficulties - the names of the drugs and reviews are easy to find on the Internet, most of them are allowed by adults, and the pharmacy does not ask for a prescription for them. But self-medication has many pitfalls.
Most often, a person loses three important things - money, time and health, since it is not a fact that the acquired product will help to cope with a specific disease if the fungus turns out to be insensitive to active ingredients drops. Only a doctor, on the basis of laboratory tests, can accurately determine the type of fungus and choose an adequate medicine.
