The use of activated carbon in diarrhea

Activated charcoal for diarrhea has been used since ancient times.

In this regard, people often have questions, how to properly organize its use, does it help with a strong digestive disorder?

It should be noted that the effectiveness of coal in the treatment of diarrhea depends on the cause of the disease. In some cases, coal will help to get rid of the problem on its own, in others it is effective only as part of complex treatment.

Principle of action of the preparation

Activated carbon is a preparation with very pronounced absorbing properties. Usually it is made from wood, coal or petroleum coke.

The activation process itself consists in opening pores that are in the closed state in the carbon material.

Due to the increased porosity of the substance, the surface area capable of absorbing toxins significantly increases.

The substance is not absorbed by the body, so all toxins that it absorbs are removed during defecation.

Activated carbon

Preparations based on activated charcoal cause some irritation of the intestinal walls, which provokes additional peristalsis. However, we are talking about physical, not chemical, stimulation.

The absorbent absorbs only those pathogens that are in the intestine and stomach, it does not affect blood and tissues.

The drug does not enter into any chemical reaction with the body, does not change the acidity of the intestine and does not have a traumatic effect on the mucosa of the internal organs.

Unfortunately, the drug does not have the ability to identify substances as harmful, so it can remove from the body and useful elements.

Molecules of undigested substances are attached to the porous structure of coal and are removed from the stool after about ten hours.

If other medications are taken while the drug is being consumed, then the effect of their components can be deactivated.

This preparation can not directly defeat diarrhea on its own. It only relieves the gastrointestinal tract from harmful substances, which will accelerate the process of cleansing the body. Coal is more likely to fight the causes of diarrhea than with a stool disorder.

The absorbent can not prevent an increased reduction in intestinal wall caused by hormonal imbalance, does not fight intestinal infections and does not affect parasitic infection of the body.

It is not able to restore the intestinal microflora, change the balance of harmful and beneficial microorganisms.

If there is a suspicion that the cause of diarrhea was a more serious illness than a minor household poisoning, then activated charcoal can only be used as part of complex therapy.

Treatment regimen and analogues

Activated charcoal is available in the form of tablets, powder, paste or aqueous suspension.

Powder and slurry exert a more active influence on the body. They are used, including, for washing the stomach with poisoning.

If diarrhea is a consequence of poisoning, then at the same time take at least 20 grams of the substance.

The drug is best used on an empty stomach, as it will absorb and remove nutrients from the body.

Do not drink coal along with other medications - it will significantly slow down, or even reduce the effect of their use.

When diarrhea should not be limited to a single dose of the drug. The intestine must be constantly cleaned of toxins entering into it, so the drug is taken throughout the day at equal intervals according to the instructions on the package.

Activated charcoal in the treatment of diarrhea should be washed down with a sufficient amount of pure water.

It should not be too cold or hot to not injure the walls of internal organs and ensure the purification of all parts of the stomach and intestines.

The lack of strong chemical activity of the drug makes it possible to use it in the treatment of diarrhea that occurs during pregnancy and lactation.

When treating children, do not give coal more than 3 times a day. It is better to render a water suspension or paste.

If only classical tablets are available, they are ground into powder and mixed with warm boiled water.

Analog of the preparation

During the reception of the drug, the feces change color to black. This effect is achieved due to mechanical staining by particles and should not cause serious concern.

Do not use this medication for more than three consecutive days. After all, absorbing nutrients for a longer time can cause serious damage and disrupt the balance of nutrients in the body.

Analogues of activated carbon are preparations based on silicon. They have more pronounced detoxification properties.

Unlike coal, they less inhibit the effect of other drugs.

Some preparations together with coal contain lactulose, prebiotics and other auxiliary substances.

Absorbent properties of modern drugs produced with nanotechnology surpass the similar properties of coal hundreds of times. However, this requires a more accurate calculation of dosage upon admission.

The most famous absorbents include such drugs as Polyphepanum, Filtrum, Enterosgel, Polysorb, Neosmectin, Diosmectin, Smecta, white coal and Ultrasorb.

Unfortunately, new generation drugs are not always available, including because of higher costs.

If no improvement occurs during the treatment with activated charcoal, then it is necessary to start taking other medications and seek medical help from a doctor.

Contraindications and side effect of the drug

Activated charcoal should not be taken to patients whose life depends on the intake of other drugs.

The effectiveness of treatment for chronic illness decreases very much and there may be an exacerbation.

However, this rule only applies to oral administration, based on the absorption of active agents by the organs of the gastrointestinal tract.

If drugs are administered intravenously or intramuscularly, then coal does not affect the assimilation process.

It is forbidden to carry out treatment with activated charcoal in the ulcer of the stomach or duodenum, if there is a possibility of bleeding of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract.

In some cases, bleeding is not identified differently than a change in stool color. The reception of coal stains the feces black, and the patient may miss a symptom of a dangerous disease.

It is forbidden to take charcoal with gastritis with low acidity. Activated carbon, by absorbing gases and toxins, reduces the secretion of gastric juice.

In conditions of reduced acidity of the stomach, this can be very dangerous. Therefore, if a gastritis is suspected, the acidity level should be investigated and taken into account when using any absorbents.

In some cases, there is also an individual intolerance to activated carbon, in which the drug is withdrawn.

Taking this medication can also lead to a slowdown in the absorption of hormones. And, consequently, it can slow down some of the body's natural processes.

The reception of coal can provoke constipation, as well as a slowdown in the assimilation of certain microelements. In some cases, pressure and blood sugar levels were reduced.

An overdose of the drug may cause vomiting, a decrease in body temperature, and in special cases, problems with blood circulation.

Contraindications for activated carbon

Absorbent intake should be strictly in accordance with the instructions and discontinued if serious side effects occur.

If there is a suspicion of serious illness, then do not limit yourself to using only this drug.

After initial treatment, you should immediately seek medical help and undergo a complete examination.
