Strong heartbeat: treatment
Strong heart palpitations have a medical term - tachycardia. It can be like a normal reaction of the body to stress, increased body temperature or physical exertion, or it may be a symptom of certain diseases of the thyroid gland, lungs, heart, etc. The choice of treatment for tachycardia depends on the reasons for which it arose.
Treatment of tachycardia( strong palpitation)
Based on the data that was obtained during the conversation and diagnosis, the doctor prescribes the necessary course of treatment. The treatment technique for such a disease as tachycardia depends heavily on what causes it occurred, how old the patient is, whether there are other diseases, etc.
What should I do if I have a fit of tachycardia?
The following actions are required:
- Try to provide access to fresh air - unbutton the shirt, go out or open the
- window. If it's dizzy, or if it gets dark in your eyes - ask for help from others.
- Place a cold object on the forehead - a wet towel, a bottle of water, etc.
- Hold your breath and strain your abdominal muscles for a while - this will raise the tone of the vagus nerve and reduce the heart rate.
- If even after all the actions you have taken, you feel unwell - call for an ambulance( or ask others to call it).
- In some cases, tachycardia does not require any special treatment. In this case, it usually passes after the causes of its appearance have been eliminated:
- If the tachycardia is due to anemia, the treatment is to take iron preparations.
- In malignant blood diseases, such as leukemia, therapy is also directed to it( usually chemotherapy is prescribed, or treatment with antitumour agents).
- Tachycardia, caused by fever, occurs after a drop in body temperature.
- If the cause is hyperthyroidism, tachycardia disappears after the level of thyroid hormone levels observed in the blood is normalized.
- Drug treatment for tachycardia caused by thyrotoxicosis is prescribed only if it carries a life threat. The following drugs are usually recommended: Propranolol, Atenolol, etc.
- In cases where a strong heartbeat appears against the background of pheochromocytoma, therapy is aimed at correcting the level of adrenaline. If tachycardia threatens the patient's health, drugs from the adrenoblocker group are used. The pheochromocytoma is treated surgically, that is, the tumor is removed.
Drug treatment for tachycardia
The following groups of drugs that are used in the therapy of tachycardia are distinguished:
- Soothing means on herbal bases - valerian, Novo-Passit, Persen, etc. Mostly used if tachycardia is caused by vegeto-vascular dystonia. Synthetic agents - Phenobarbital, Diazepam, etc. Like the first group, they are used for vegetative-vascular dystonia. These drugs normalize the work of the nervous system, thus reducing the frequency of tachycardia attacks.
- Antiarrhythmic drugs - here include many medications with different mechanisms of action. The funds of this group should be taken strictly according to the doctor's prescription, because the same medicinal product can be extremely effective in treating one type of tachycardia and harmful in another type. Examples of such drugs are Adenosine, Propranolol, Flecainide, Verapamil, etc.
Surgical treatment of tachycardia
There are several diseases that cause tachycardia, for the cure of which surgical intervention is required:
- Hormonal disorders such as pheochromocytoma and thyrotoxicosis. If these diseases are diagnosed, then, as a rule, surgery is performed to remove a site of the gland that produces too many hormones, or a tumor if it is present.
- At the heart operation is performed only with serious congenital heart diseases, complications from rheumatism, ischemic heart disease( violation of the blood supply to the heart), etc.
