Aura in epilepsy Aura - what is it? In physics, this word means an optical phenomenon, in parapsychology - some kind of invisible shell that surrounds all life. In neuropathology, aura refers to the special state of a person with epilepsy, which indicates that the person suffering from the ailment is about to get stuck in an epileptic fit.

Translated from the Latin "aura" means "whiff".So, by the way, was called one of the goddesses of ancient Greek mythology, who was in charge of a light wind. Just as in nature, after a silent sound can follow a storm, so in medicine after the arrival of an aura, a person with epilepsy is able to survive a serious epileptic attack.

Types of aura and their manifestations

Aura is the immediate beginning of a seizure. The forms of its manifestation are different. It depends on what kind of epilepsy the person is sick and where the affected area of the brain is. There are several main types of aura. Sensory aura occurs most often. It is characterized by:

  • sparks or bright flashes before the eyes;
  • sharp deterioration of vision or complete loss of vision;
  • sounding sharp sounds;
  • sensation of a variety of odors as harsh, repulsive, and soft, pleasant;
  • dizziness.

Viscorosensory and visceromotor aura are associated mainly with unpleasant and unpredictable sensations in the stomach. Their signs:

  • sharply rolling nausea;
  • enlargement or narrowing of pupils with frequent blinking;
  • change in skin condition - it can turn red or turn pale;
  • the patient throws something in the heat, then in the cold;
  • pain and rumbling in the abdomen;
  • tension in the intestine.

The impulsive aura is, perhaps, one of the most difficult forms of the manifestation of the onset of an epileptic attack, primarily for people who surround a sick person. You can talk about it if:

  • a person is very excited, and his emotions are negative-destructive;
  • he starts to rush about the room and involuntarily scream;
  • the patient can perform uncharacteristic actions for him - to strive for something to set on fire, attract attention to himself by undressing, loud singing, wreck of surrounding objects.

The mental aura is most difficult for the patient. It is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • visual hallucinations, including unrealistic or catastrophic;
  • Feeling of fear and horror;
  • blurred vision and unclear thinking;
  • memory dips;
  • sensation of "deja vu" or, conversely, awareness never before occurred;
  • person ceases to understand who he is and where he is;
  • tormented by his thoughts, which he allegedly forced someone from outside.

In addition, the vegetative aura is singled out when the patient begins to beat the heart more often, puffs up the suffocation, suffers from thirst. And with a motor aura, one can observe motor and verbal obsession - a person makes monotonous movements and repeats the same words.

Important! Different types of aura can manifest separately or in a complex way, one aura may change over time with another, but all of them can lead to convulsive epileptic seizures with complete disconnection of consciousness.

Aura development features

Aura in epilepsy Aura in epilepsy comes suddenly. This state can last from a few seconds to several minutes. Upon his expiration, a person either completely loses consciousness and regains consciousness only after the seizure is completed, or, in rare cases, returns to his usual state, bypassing the attack.

That is, not every time the aura precedes the seizure, and, conversely, not every epileptic seizure is preceded by an aura. As a rule, the aura accompanies generalized convulsive attacks, when epileptic pathology affects both hemispheres of the brain. Such seizures are present in the life of every second person with a diagnosis of "epilepsy." It turns out that approximately 50% of patients have experience of experiencing a condition that heralds a seizure.

Pros and cons of aura

During an epileptic fit, the patient does not remember anything. But the origin of the attack, its beginning, that is, the immediate arrival of the aura, its consciousness fixes. As a rule, it causes him a lot of negative emotions:

  • to live "with a sense of trouble," even if only for a few seconds, very hard psychologically;
  • hallucinations and other manifestations of the lack of self-consciousness and understanding of the inability to control one's actions bring a lot of physical and emotional discomfort;
  • many patients that time, which precedes the aura, characterize as depressive.

In this case, however strange it may sound, the aura during epilepsy causes the patient not only suffering. Sometimes it can become a positive factor for the patient, and for his loved ones, and even for the treating doctors. Here's what the patients themselves say:

  • when a person feels that there are only minutes or even seconds left before the attack, he can have time to protect himself from possible physical injuries - to sit in an armchair or even lie down on the floor, to release his hands from objects;
  • before an epileptic seizure during an aura you can worry about your loved ones - warn them about the impending state and allow them to prepare for it;
  • , many patients use precious aura time in order to block gas in the house and turn off household appliances.

A person can exist for a long time exclusively with isolated auras, which will not flow into more serious forms. But if the harbingers of attacks come more and more often, then it is likely that epileptic seizures do not take long to wait. This means that with any non-standard manifestation of consciousness, you should immediately consult a doctor.
