Barley on the eye: how to treat medication at home

Barley (hordeolum) is an inflammation of an infectious nature that develops in the sebaceous gland of Zeiss or at the base of the eyelash (hair follicle). Its appearance brings great discomfort, since barley looks very unattractive on the eye and is accompanied by severe pain with any movement of the eyelid.

There is also a variant of internal purulent inflammation - it is formed in the meibomian gland and is visible when the eyelid is pulled from the inside.

Such a relapse is less common, but as a complication it can lead to a chronic disease of the lower eyelid - chalazion, another name for which is frozen barley.

In this case, most often it is necessary to resort to surgical intervention.

In general, hordeolum is characterized by an unexpected onset and rapid development of inflammation, most often it occurs singly.

You cannot treat it as a temporary inconvenience: its occurrence is a clear signal from the body that the immune system is weakened and immediate treatment is required.

Causes and symptoms.

In most cases, the source of the appearance of barley is a conditionally pathogenic microbe. Staphylococcus aureus, which is constantly present in the human body, being part of the microflora of the skin and hair.

Elementary lack of hygiene can provoke its active reproduction.

Against the background of a weakened immunity, it will be enough scratch an eye with a dirty hand or wipe your face with a stale towel and cause infection.

The following factors also contribute to inflammation:

  • Hypothermia (followed by a temporary decrease in immunity);
  • The presence in the body of a purulent parasite Staphylococcus aureus;
  • Chronic infections - tonsillitis, caries, adenoiditis and others;
  • The presence of such diseases as diabetes, seborrhea, chronic blepharitis, anemia, hepatitis;
  • Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with a violation of the intestinal microflora;
  • Vitamin deficiency and hypovitaminosis (lack of one or more vitamins);
  • Helminthic invasion;
  • Congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies;
  • In rare cases, the ciliary mite demodex;

Wearing contact lenses or using low-quality cosmetics can also become a disease-provoking factor, but it is never the root cause of the disease.

The main symptoms of hordeolum:

During the self-determination of the diagnosis of barley in the eye, some photos from the Internet can lead to misconception, so see above, if you do not have similar inflammatory processes, you may have something other.

You need to know all the symptoms of this disease:

  • Burning and itching of the eyelids;
  • Feeling of a foreign body under the eyelid;
  • Swelling and redness of the eyelid, hardening;
  • Painful sensations from touching the inflamed area and when blinking;
  • The appearance of tearing;
  • The appearance of a yellow dot on the edema is an accumulation of pus;

In some cases, these symptoms may be accompanied by headache, inflammation of the nearest lymph nodes and fever.

What not to do with barley

If you have a swelling on the eyelid, in no case should you do the following:

  • comb the affected area with your hands;
  • use contact lenses during illness;
  • use any cosmetics, even high quality ones;
  • try to hide the swelling with a plaster;
  • warm up after the appearance of pus;
  • try to squeeze out or independently open the purulent head with a sharp object;
  • make wet compresses on the eye;
  • in the cold season, before going outside, it is necessary to apply a dry sterile bandage to the sore eye;
  • overheat barley, go to a bath, sauna or hot shower.

Seeing a photo of barley on the eye on the Internet, you can get scared and even listen to folk signs like spitting in the eye and washing it with urine. This cannot be done, such actions can only lead to the introduction of an additional infection into the eye, and not to recovery!

How to quickly cure barley

The initial stage of the disease still allows you to quickly prevent relapse.

If you take action immediately after the onset of the primary symptoms - itching, redness and soreness - the infection may not have time to spread and suppuration will not appear, the edema will disappear without a trace within 1-2 days.

  1. First of all, it is necessary to treat the affected area with an antiseptic. For this, ordinary vodka or rubbing alcohol is suitable. It is necessary to dilute it with water in a 1: 1 ratio, soak a cotton swab with alcohol, squeeze it hard and apply it to the inflamed area, at the very base of the sore eyelash. Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes! If vodka is not on hand, use brilliant green or alcohol-containing iodine. This method avoids the development of an abscess.
  2. Dry warming is a good remedy at the very beginning of infection. To do this, you can boil a hard-boiled egg, or heat sea salt or any cereal in a pan - buckwheat, wheat, rice. Next, wrap the resulting heat source with a clean cloth (you can use a handkerchief) and keep it on the eye until the dry compress cools down. This will accelerate "ripening", but do not overdo it: pus can come out in the opposite direction, under the eyelid, get into the conjunctiva and cause sepsis.

Treatment of barley with medication

If it was not possible to prevent the development of inflammation, the best solution would be to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and drawing up a correct drug treatment program.

Not knowing how to treat hordeolum correctly, you can provoke chronic diseases such as chalazion, cystic formation and even meningitis.

Pus must come out of the inflamed area. If this did not happen naturally, you cannot squeeze it out at home: this threatens with infection of other organs (including blood), as well as the surrounding people.

To avoid this, it is better to contact an ophthalmologist, he will make a puncture under sterile conditions without damaging the eye glands. There is no scar from such a puncture.

Antibacterial eye drops

Used to kill germs. Suitable for both treatment and prevention of hordeolum and other infectious eye diseases.

They are used 3-5 times during the day; during use, you should avoid touching the bottle to the eye itself.

When treating barley, the following drops are suitable:

  • Albucid,
  • Tobrex (the safest drug),
  • Floxal,
  • Levomycetin,
  • Gentamicin,
  • Chloramphenicol,
  • Vigamox.

Antibacterial eye ointments

Ointments perform similar functions, but are intended for night use: these drugs temporarily reduce vision.

The use of eye drops and ointments in combination gives the fastest effect. But when buying from a pharmacy, be sure to specify that you are purchasing an eye preparation!

Drops and ointments for the skin of the same name are always too high in active ingredients and will irreversibly damage the eyes. Expired drugs should not be used.

Effective for barley will be:

  • tetracycline ointment 1%,
  • Synthomycin emulsion,
  • Hydrocortisone,
  • Eubetal,
  • Maxidex.
  • Erythromycin,
  • Tobrex,
  • Colbiocin,
  • Floxal (ofloxacin),
  • Maxitrol,

Oral antibiotics

In cases with multiple rashes, with complications and lack of effect from local treatment, the doctor prescribes antibiotics for oral administration. These drugs stop the growth of microbes.

Most often, this method of treatment is indicated for children and people with significantly weakened immunity. Usually, drugs are prescribed such as:

  • Flemoklav solutab,
  • Azitrox,
  • Azithromycin,
  • Doxycycline,
  • Sumamed,
  • Hemomycin,
  • Zitrolide and cephalosporins.

The dose and frequency of use is prescribed by the doctor.

Eye wash solutions

They are used only after the purulent vesicle has burst, or has been punctured and treated by a doctor.

Washing is done as follows:

  • the drug is instilled into the eye,
  • and then remove the excess with a cotton pad
  • or a sterile bandage.

Suitable for washing:

  • sodium sulfacyl (solution 30%),
  • furacilin solution,
  • a decoction of chamomile pharmacy.

Physiotherapy

It is prescribed by a doctor only at a stable body temperature and at the stage of pus formation.

As a rule, this is UHF therapy 6-8 minutes for 4-6 days, or microwave therapy.

Concomitant treatment

If there are additional symptoms in the form of headaches, general malaise, or fever, doctors prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol, and vitamin tablets.

Treatment of barley in children

If a child complains of pain and scabies in the eye, then this most often indicates the appearance of hordeolum. Unfortunately, many parents begin to read incorrect articles about barley in the eye, looking at images, which can scare the parents of the child and provoke ill-considered self-medication, up to folk conspiracies.

If barley appears in a child, and within 3-4 days it was not possible to stop the development of the tumor with the described means, it is imperative to consult a pediatrician.

In the case of a child under 1 year old, it is required to go to the doctor immediately - it is impossible to prescribe the baby treatment on your own so as not to provoke an allergic reaction.

Barley prevention

By observing a few basic rules of hygiene and a healthy lifestyle every day, you can avoid not only barley disease, but also many other, more dangerous diseases.

  • Maintaining immunity. Since the main cause of barley disease remains lowered immunity, it is worth adjusting the diet and diversify the diet with vegetables and drink a course of adaptogens (tinctures of Radiola rosea, Schisandra chinensis, Eleutherococcus or ginseng). You should also avoid possible stress as much as possible, get enough sleep and introduce physical exercise into your daily schedule. Even a standard morning exercise for 10-15 minutes significantly improves overall well-being and keeps the body in good shape.
  • Hand hygiene is imperative. You also need to get rid of the habit of unconsciously touching your eyes during the day.
  • In the morning and evening, while washing your face, clean your eyes with cotton pads or a sterile bandage. Moisturizing eye drops can be used throughout the day. If contact lenses are used, follow all rules for wearing and caring for them.
  • Each family member should have their own towel and their own cosmetics.
  • Preventive procedures in areas where hordeolum appears.

By itself, this swelling on the eyelid does not pose a great threat to the body, if you do not let its development take its course and seek help from specialists before complications appear.
