The essence of diarrhea diets
The main task during diarrhea is to reduce the stress on the gastrointestinal tract, as well as create a favorable environment in the body for the fastest recovery.
With diarrhea in children, a lot of fluid is washed out of the body, and nutrients do not have time to be absorbed by the intestines.
In addition, you need to follow the standard rules that must be used for a therapeutic diet for diarrhea in children:
- Restore water-salt balance.
- Correct the diet, which should be fractional and at the same time.
- All products used must be easy to digest.
- The child's diet should be based on the age of the baby.
Now you need to understand in more detail with each item in order to help the child during diarrhea.
Normalization of water-salt balance
With diarrhea in children, before adjusting the diet, you need to take care not to lead the body to dehydration.
If there is no such symptom in a child as vomiting, then recovery consists in increased consumption of water and other means.
Special solutions are perfect for this:
- "Regidron".
- "Tour".
- "Humana".
They are sold in a pharmacy and dispensed without a prescription, and for preparation it is enough to dissolve 1 packet of the product in a liter of water.
It is necessary to give the solution to drink in small portions of 5-30 ml, an interval of a quarter of an hour is made between doses.
The dosage depends on how old the child is and what the severity of the diarrhea is. To determine such parameters, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
In addition to medicinal solutions, other remedies are also restored that can be done at home. This includes various decoctions from:
- Raisins.
- Carrots.
- Rice.
- Rosehip.
- Chamomile.
- Blueberries.
Mineral water helps children recover well, from which gas is released before use, green tea can be prepared without the use of sweeteners.
You can make the solution yourself if you add ¼ tsp to 500 ml of water. salt and soda, as well as ½ tsp. Sahara.
Infant nutrition
For diarrhea in infants, a fasting diet was previously used, but doctors refused such therapy, since fasting leads to lack of nutrients, especially proteins, due to which the child may lose weight, and recovery from diarrhea is carried out much longer.
Babies who do not vomit with diarrhea will need to continue breastfeeding.
If the baby feeds on breast milk, then it can be given, but it will be necessary to increase the frequency of feeding, while the dosage of milk, which is given for feeding, is reduced. Children should be applied to the chest for 5-10 minutes.
The benefits of breastfeeding are as follows:
- The composition of milk is ideally balanced for the baby and has all the useful and nutritious substances.
- Milk contains many biological active substances that help get rid of diarrhea.
For children under one year old who eat artificial mixtures, you can use a similar feeding technique. You need to feed often, but the dosage of the ready-made mixture is halved.
Doctors for children under one year old recommend using medicated fermented milk mixtures for diarrhea.
In some situations, when children have intestinal infection, doctors recommend using hydrolysis mixtures, for example, "Frisopep" or similar mixtures.
For a one-year-old child or a toddler who has already received complementary foods, with diarrhea, you just need to change the menu. In this case, complementary feeding is excluded, and feeding is carried out with breast milk or formula.
After the permission of the doctor, after a couple of days, complementary foods can be reintroduced, but in small doses, and the condition can be monitored. It is recommended that you feed your child with foods that were normal before diarrhea.
Nutrition from 1 year
With diarrhea in children over 1 year old, from the first day, you can give low-fat fermented milk products, and on the third day you can use a low-fat type of cottage cheese for it.
At first, namely the first couple of days with diarrhea, it will be necessary to increase the frequency of feeding. Thus, a child can be fed 1-2 times more often per day, as a result, he should eat 5-6 times a day.
Similar to infants, portions of food should be reduced and a reduced amount of food should be given. If the baby refuses to eat, then you do not need to force him.
With a severe form of diarrhea, there is no need to give food at all, about 2 feedings are skipped, after which the food can be made fractional, with portions reduced in half.
Over the course of a week, the portion of food should be gradually increased until everything returns to normal.
At the beginning of the diet, the child needs to eat more slimy soups in vegetable broth, to which rice, buckwheat or oatmeal is added.
Additionally, it is allowed to eat porridge, which must be made on water and given without adding oil; for porridge, the same cereals are used as for soup.
A child under 2 years old needs to cook soups and cereals, but before eating, the dishes are wiped using a sieve to get the consistency of mashed potatoes.
It is allowed to give during diarrhea jelly made from fresh fruits, especially blueberries, as well as various compotes.
If you cook about fermented milk products, then it is allowed to use from the first days of diarrhea:
- Biokefirs.
- Lactonia.
- Acidophilus.
All products can be given only fresh, in which there are no additives, and the fat content does not exceed 2.5%.
On the second day of the diet, the menu can be supplemented with white bread crumbs and dietetic breads. On the third day, you can feed the child with banana puree and cottage cheese.
During diarrhea, it is useful to cook and feed the child with baked apples, since they contain substances that quickly restore the flora and intestinal mucosa.
If apples are used, then they can be eaten fresh only from the third day of the diet, only in grated form.
From day 4, meat products should be added to the child's menu, namely, minced chicken or veal, turkey.
It is recommended to cook steamed cutlets and meatballs from minced meat. Steamed fish and eggs are also allowed.
If a child older than a year has diarrhea, then the following are completely removed from the diet:
- Fresh herbal products.
- Nuts.
- Milk and fermented baked milk.
- Fresh juices.
- Legumes.
- Mushrooms.
- Black bread.
- Sweets.
- Bakery products.
- Soda.
Diarrhea should be accompanied by sugar restrictions. Junk food is necessarily excluded, which has a bad effect on the work of not only the digestive tract, but also the liver and kidneys.
These foods include pickled, salted, smoked and fatty foods.
It is better not to cook strong meat broths for children, since diarrhea does not go away from this. All meals and foodstuffs must be warmed up before being given to eat, but they must be warm, not hot.
When the diarrhea stops, you need to continue to stick to the diet for another 1-2 weeks.
The timing of the diet can be discussed with the doctor, and they directly depend on the reasons for the appearance of diarrhea and the degree of its severity.
Nutrition according to the Komarovsky method for children 1-5 years old
After the onset of diarrhea, Dr. Komarovsky does not recommend feeding children on the first day. After that, you can give boiled rice, a very small portion, as well as the water where the rice was cooked.
For diarrhea after the first day, you can give bananas and apple juice, and it is also useful to feed the babies with boiled potatoes, which helps to stop the diarrhea.
Fresh bread is not used, it is allowed to use white bread, after several days from the moment of its preparation, or it is necessary to make crackers from it.
Only lean types of meat and fish can be used and products should be cooked exclusively with steam. It is allowed to use jelly or strong tea immediately after the onset of diarrhea.
With diarrhea, you need to give more mucous soups and cereals that strengthen the stomach and intestines. Also, after the onset of diarrhea, set the daily regimen and feed the child at the same time.
The doctor recommends using smaller portions, but increasing their intake.
As soon as children develop diarrhea, it is recommended not to self-medicate, especially if additional symptoms appear, but to go straight to the pediatrician.
Regardless of the treatment, for diarrhea, you can use the described rules and dietary recommendations, which will increase the effectiveness and speed of treatment.
