Most people are sure that nail fungus is just a cosmetic defect that, if desired, can be easily eliminated with the help of advertised pharmaceutical preparations. In fact, this is a serious pathology that can develop into a systemic disease and cause certain complications. In the fight against it, many means are used, and one of them is hydrogen peroxide. We invite you to learn about its effectiveness in relation to this problem.

Hydrogen peroxide for nail fungus

The principle of action of the remedy for onychomycosis

Peroxide in the chemical formula contains only two types of molecules - hydrogen and oxygen. It is distinguished from water or H2O by a single oxygen atom. According to the scientific substance, it is called peroxide. In medicine, the agent is used to treat wounds, burns and other skin injuries with a disinfecting purpose.

The use of peroxide in the fight against nail fungus is due to its disinfectant and antibacterial properties. The drug destroys the pathogenic microflora, stimulates the regenerative functions of damaged tissues, and prevents the attachment of a secondary infection.

The method of treating onychomycosis with hydrogen peroxide is gentle, effective and affordable, provided that we are not talking about an advanced form of the pathological process. Consider what recipes based on this medication exist, but let's start with the preparatory procedures.

Preparing for treatment

The use of any pharmacy and folk remedies for external use at home will be more effective if the lesions to be treated are properly prepared. This procedure includes steaming and mechanical cleansing of the nail plates and nearby skin areas affected by a fungal infection. By removing the excess stratum corneum, the active components of hydrogen peroxide will more easily penetrate deep into the nail and have their therapeutic effect.

So, the steaming of the plates begins with a bath. In 2 liters of hot water add 2 tbsp. l. soda and several crystals of potassium permanganate. The solution is stirred and the feet or hands are immersed in it for 20 minutes.

Preparatory baths

After the procedure, the feet are dried, the softened edges of the nails are cut off with a nail scissors, the surface layer is cleaned off from their affected areas with a nail file.

Hydrogen peroxide for the treatment of nail rollers can be used both 3% and 35% - perhydrol, and it can also be taken in the form of hydroperite tablets. Without preliminary dilution of the medication, only the first option is allowed for use. More saturated concentrations of the agent - perhydrol and hydroperite, can lead to chemical burns and aggravate the problem, so they try to resort to them only in extreme cases.

Application methods

Treatment of nail fungus with hydrogen peroxide is carried out by various methods. The product is used both independently and in combination with other folk remedies.

Peroxide baths. The most popular way to combat onychomycosis is with this drug. The procedures are approved for use at any stage of the pathological process, including for prophylactic purposes. Consider the basic recipes for baths in the following table.

Procedure name Description
BATHS WITH 3% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3% of the drug is combined with warm water in equal proportions. Fingers or toes are lowered into the container for 30 minutes, after which they are dried without a towel. The manipulation is done shortly before bedtime.
WITH ADDITION OF DEGTER SOAP Add 4 tablespoons to 2 liters of hot water. l. 3% peroxide and the same amount of soap crushed into shavings. The recommended treatment time is 20 minutes.
WITH HYDROPERIT For 1 liter of water, 10 tablets of hydroperite will be needed. The drug should be completely dissolved in liquid, and then the diseased limbs should be lowered there for a quarter of an hour.
WITH NAKED SPIRIT In 1 liter of water heated to 50 ° C, add 40 ml of 3% peroxide and ammonia solution.
WITH IODINE For 1 liter of water, take 20 drops of iodine and the same amount of peroxide, take the procedure for fungus on the feet for 15 minutes.
Hydrogen peroxide baths

Peroxide baths can become a daily self-administered remedy - in this case, do not it is worth rushing to wipe your feet dry and put on hosiery on them, let the affected tissues dry on one's own. So it is complex - after a water procedure, it is allowed to treat foci of fungal infection with any means of an antimycotic nature.

Peroxide compresses. Lotions with the use of this drug are no less popular in traditional medicine. As in the case of baths, the recipes include both hydrogen peroxide itself and its mixture with additional medicinal products.

Compresses are applied to pre-steamed and cleaned nail plates, without affecting healthy areas of the skin. From above they are fixed with a plaster and cling film. It is allowed to keep the lotions on the hands for no more than 20 minutes, on the legs - up to 1 hour. The duration of therapy is from 2 weeks, procedures are carried out 2 times a day.

Peroxide compresses

Consider in the following table common recipes for compresses based on peroxide.

Procedure name Description
LOTS WITH PEROXIDE AND VINEGAR 3% peroxide in equal proportions is mixed with 9% vinegar (can be replaced with lemon juice), abundantly moisten a cotton pad with the resulting liquid and apply it to the diseased nail, waiting for the end of the reaction - "Hiss". After the procedure, the plates are dried and additionally treated with tea tree oil. The course is 7 days.
WITH SODA AND SALT Mix for 1 tsp. l. table salt, soda and 3% peroxide, dilute the resulting composition 4 tsp. l. clean water. Apply the paste to the prepared nail plates in an even layer, fix with polyethylene and foil for 40 minutes. The course is 1 month with two daily procedures.
WITH HYDROPERIT Grind 6 tablets of hydroperite to a state of flour and mix with an equal amount of petroleum jelly to obtain a kind of ointment. Apply the composition to the nails 3 times a day with light rubbing movements, leaving until completely absorbed. It is recommended to fix it with a bandage or put on socks at night. The course is repeated until the symptoms of pathology disappear and a new nail grows back.

Peroxide treatment according to Neumyvakin

Many experts are against oral administration of the drug, but there are methods that involve saturating the body with oxygen from the inside. And one of them was developed by Dr. Neumyvakin.

According to his method, the patient must use peroxide in a complex manner. For internal administration of the drug, the following recommendations should be observed:

  • the medication is used on an empty stomach;
  • only 3% peroxide diluted with clean water is used for treatment;
  • the daily dose should not exceed 30 drops;
  • you should start taking with one drop, gradually increasing the volume of peroxide to the maximum dosage.

Professor Neumyvakin believes that oral administration of the drug helps to destroy the fungus in the body.

Additionally, the doctor recommends using peroxide from mycosis in the form of baths. Dissolve 1 tsp in hot water. l. vitriol and place the limbs in it for 20 minutes, after which the feet are wiped. On steamed nails, cotton swabs are applied, abundantly moistened with 3% peroxide, for 30 minutes.

At the end of the procedure, the compresses are removed, the nail plates are cleaned from damaged tissues, which become soft and easily move away from their surface. To achieve the maximum therapeutic effect, after all the manipulations, an antifungal ointment or cream can be applied to the nails.

The neglected form of onychomycosis

The fight against an old infection only with the help of external means is not carried out - usually this is not enough, since the causative agent of the disease has time to penetrate into the body. It is necessary to treat advanced onychomycosis systemically, combining local and oral antimycotics. Hydrogen peroxide can be used in this scheme, but only with an auxiliary purpose - in the form of trays and lotions.

Treatment of shoes with hydrogen peroxide

Peroxide is effective in the fight against pathogens of onychomycosis, as an active antibacterial and disinfectant, therefore, it is additionally used for prophylactic purposes. For example, for processing shoes. The only drawback of this procedure is the need for daily use, which is not always convenient, but the affordable price of the drug does not exclude this possibility.

A piece of cloth, preferably made of cotton, is moistened abundantly with hydrogen peroxide and the inner surface of the shoe is wiped. It is recommended to do the processing at night, so that by the morning the wardrobe items are dry and disinfected.

Use in children, pregnant and lactating

External use of 3% hydrogen peroxide is not contraindicated in childhood and for women preparing to become mothers. The drug, when applied topically, is not absorbed into the general bloodstream, does not enter the fetus through the placental barrier and does not penetrate into breast milk. Therefore, peroxide in the form of lotions and compresses can be a real salvation for women who you temporarily cannot use serious antifungal medications due to pregnancy and lactation.

The only thing that is undesirable for expectant mothers is hot foot baths. High temperatures can cause blood flow to the pelvic organs and provoke contractions that can lead to complications such as spontaneous miscarriage or premature onset of labor activities.

Contraindications, side effects

There are no strict restrictions on the use of hydrogen peroxide when it comes to its 3% form of the drug. It is possible that a burning sensation may appear during treatment with a remedy that passes on its own after a few minutes.

It is undesirable to apply complex formulations with peroxide to healthy areas of the skin - this can lead to local tissue irritation.

How to replace hydrogen peroxide?

Among folk remedies, there are many drugs that have a pronounced antifungal effect. Consider how you can replace peroxide.

Tea tree oil. Its active components - terpienes, sabinenes, pinene and fellandrenes help to destroy dermatophytes and pathogens of candidiasis. The product can be used alone to treat affected nail plates, or in combination with other medicinal products.

Tea tree oil, Iodine

Iodine. A powerful antiseptic that destroys all known types of fungus. The drug stimulates the coagulation of protein fractions, of which pathogenic microorganisms are composed, that is, it kills the causative agents of onychomycosis at the cellular level.

Propolis. A strong fungicidal and bactericidal agent that not only destroys the fungal flora, but also helps to eliminate the symptoms of the disease.

Reviews

Marina, 40 years old. “The problem of onychomycosis affected me after a trip to the sea. Initially I tried to get rid of it with one advertised spray, but nothing helped. I decided to go along an alternative path, and began to make baths with hydroperite tablets. I noticed improvements in a week, after a month and a half the disease was gone. "

Masha, 25 years old. “I wetted cotton pads abundantly with hydrogen peroxide and applied it to weak, affected nails several times a day. I repeated the procedures often and within a month the pathological process disappeared, possibly because I noticed the infection early. "

Galina, 28 years old. “I treated the nail fungus with boric alcohol and 3% hydrogen peroxide, alternating the preparations with each other. It took several months to completely eliminate the defeat. "

Using hydrogen peroxide in the fight against nail fungus, you do not need to count on quick results. Onychomycosis, especially in its advanced form, requires a lot of time and patience from the patient - it will take at least 3–12 months to fully recover.
