Garlic is used in folk medicine in the fight against colds and parasitic diseases. But in addition to antibacterial and antiviral properties, this product also has an active effect against mycoses. Therefore, the treatment of nail fungus with garlic is practiced quite often.

The effectiveness of the treatment
Any folk remedy with therapeutic capabilities has healing components in its composition. And garlic is no exception. Organic acids and essential oils contained in its composition form negative conditions for the growth and reproduction of a fungal infection, provoking its death.
Consider the healing properties of garlic in the table.
| Healing properties | Description |
|---|---|
| ANTIMICROBIAL | Destroys pathogenic microflora, including pathogens of onychomycosis. |
| IMMUNOMODULATING | Enhances general and local protection. |
| RESTORING | Promotes the regeneration of damaged tissues. |
| SYMPTOMATIC | Improves well-being by relieving itching and burning caused by fungal infection. |
Thus, garlic has a complex effect on the disease, killing not only the causative agents of onychomycosis, but also eliminating local inflammatory processes, accelerating the recovery of diseased tissues, stimulating the body's defenses and relieving unpleasant symptoms of itching and discomfort.
The effectiveness of treatment with this product will be high, provided the early stage of the nail fungus, when the infection has affected no more than ⅓ of the plate. Otherwise, self-medication with garlic will be useless, and sometimes unsafe, since the pathological process will be launched. In such situations, it is recommended to use folk remedies in the form of auxiliary help, and the main emphasis is to provide drug therapy.
Recipes for use with onychomycosis
Garlic from nail fungus is included in recipes for folk mycotic remedies. They use the product both fresh and processed. Let's consider these methods of treatment in more detail.
The first recipe is juice. The simplest and at the same time effective method is rubbing freshly squeezed garlic juice into the affected nail plate. This is done with a cotton swab 3-5 times a day.

It is recommended to continue the course of application until complete recovery. If we are talking about an advanced infection, which is more difficult to recover from, experts advise combining rubbing garlic juice with oral administration of the drug Nystatin, Clotrimazole ointment or a special varnish with an antifungal effect.
The second recipe is tincture. It has an enhanced antiseptic effect. For its preparation, garlic juice is mixed with 96% medical alcohol in equal proportions. The future remedy is insisted in a shaded place for at least 3 days.
The tincture is used by analogy with juice, in the same way rubbing it into the surface of the affected nail several times a day. Due to the alcohol base, it will have a stronger therapeutic effect. It is important not to apply the product to the skin around the nail, as this can lead to various irritations and allergic reactions.
The third recipe is gruel. A few cloves of garlic are chopped to a puree in a blender. The resulting product is carefully spread over the surface of the nail, being careful not to touch the skin around it. Then cellophane, a cotton swab are applied to the gruel and the compress is fixed in the form of a bandage for the whole night.

In the morning, the application is removed, the feet are washed in running water and the affected nail tissues softened with garlic are trimmed. The procedure is practiced every other day until complete recovery.
The fourth recipe is butter. Another effective remedy for fungus, which allows you to cure the disease at home. The preparation is simple: a head of peeled garlic is crumbled into a clean container and poured with any sunflower oil in an amount that completely covers the product. The remedy is insisted for several days.
The finished oil is filtered and used to treat lesions with onychomycosis. Sore areas are lubricated every day, morning and evening, until complete recovery occurs.
The fifth recipe is garlic and salt. In this case, the treatment is carried out with a whole product. Several cloves of garlic, depending on the number of affected nail plates, are cut in two and sprinkled with fine salt. The therapeutic procedure consists in rubbing the foci of infection with the resulting agent until complete recovery. The course of therapy can drag on for several weeks or even months, since the method acts gently, and, therefore, slowly.

The sixth recipe is vinegar and garlic. It is no secret that the acidic environment kills the fungal flora, helping in the fight against onychomycosis even in difficult cases. On the basis of garlic, a preparation with such properties is prepared as follows: 200 ml of apple or 9% table vinegar and a few crushed cloves of the product are insisted for 14 days in an airtight container.
It is not difficult to treat nail fungus with this remedy. Garlic vinegar is used to treat lesions of the toes and hands. A bandage is applied on top and a compress is set aside for the whole night. In the morning, the product is washed off, the procedure is repeated daily until complete recovery. To enhance the effect, you can add onions to the garlic.
Seventh recipe - Garlic powder. Even when dried, this product has antimycotic properties. The remedy is not difficult to prepare: several cloves of garlic are cut into crowbars and dried at room temperature. The resulting mass is crushed using a coffee grinder and used for its intended purpose.
This can be done in two ways:
- Rub the powder into the affected nail plates and the skin near them.
- Pour into the socks and shoes of a sick person, regularly changing the product to a new one.

This garlic preparation has a mild effect and should not be expected to have a quick effect. But the result of the treatment will not be affected by this.
The eighth recipe is an ointment. Sea salt enhances the anti-fungal effect of garlic, and the fatty base provides an enveloping effect, due to which the drug has a longer effect on lesions.
To prepare the ointment, you will need 50 grams of butter, a head of chopped garlic and 2 tbsp. tablespoons of salt. The components are ground to a homogeneous consistency and applied to the area of the nails and skin affected by the infection. The treatment is carried out twice a day with a freshly prepared product. Storage of garlic ointment is excluded, since it easily loses its properties after contact with air. The course of treatment is one month.
Prevention of re-infection
The product helps against fungal infection not only during active treatment, but also after the person has recovered. At this stage, you can use any of the above recipes, but with a lower frequency of use. For prophylactic purposes, two procedures per week are enough.
The most successful recipe for preventing re-infection with onychomycosis is garlic juice. It is advisable to use it for another 20 days after recovery. The use of the product is recommended to be combined with a solution of potassium permanganate (potassium permanganate). Initially, the legs are steamed in a bath based on it, and then the nails and feet are treated with freshly squeezed garlic juice. It is believed that such measures are sufficient, taken at least twice a week, to prevent the re-development of the infection.
Use in children, pregnant and lactating
The external use of many garlic-based recipes is not contraindicated for expectant and lactating mothers, as well as children. Rubbing the juice and gruel of the product, using oil and salt with garlic will not have a negative effect on a person. These remedies act gently and gradually, therefore, in the initial stages of the disease, when the use of medications is undesirable, garlic can be a salvation.
In any case, one should not forget about the danger of self-medication. If there is no positive dynamics when exposed to folk remedies in the next 4 weeks, it is recommended to consult a specialist.
Contraindications
The only limitation to the use of garlic remedies at home is the presence of allergies. In case of individual intolerance, it is important to abandon this remedy in favor of alternative folk methods, for example, treating foot fungus with iodine or brilliant green.
Side effects
Adverse reactions from the body can occur with prolonged exposure to garlic preparations in high concentrations, which causes skin burns. In order to prevent this, it is important to observe the dosage in the preparation of medicinal products and apply them in accordance with the therapy regimen. When using freshly squeezed juice, gruel or vinegar based on garlic, you must avoid intentional contact with healthy areas of the body.
Reviews
Yuri, 45 years old. “After reading online responses about the therapeutic effect of garlic on nail fungus, I began to eat one clove in the morning with water, and rub the juice into the lesions every day. For this purpose, I used my own grown garden product. After 3 weeks, healthy nails began to grow at the site of the diseased nails. Then I took garlic as a preventive measure. "
Alena, 32 years old. “As a fan of traditional medicine, I could not refuse the treatment of onychomycosis at home. I believe that there will be no harm with the correct use of recipes. I rubbed garlic gruel into the nails, which turned yellow from the fungus, and additionally made baths based on laundry soap and sea salt. The treatment helped - the problem receded without the use of medications. Recommend".
Garlic is a cheap and effective treatment for fungal infections on the nails. With proper use, there is every chance of achieving a complete recovery, provided that the treatment is carried out at an early stage of the disease.
Of the minuses of the product, only its unpleasant smell can be noted, but it is easy to close your eyes to this if the product gives the expected effect.
