Nail fungus (onychomycosis) requires mandatory treatment. Along with traditional medicine, there are alternative methods in the form of folk remedies. Treatment of nail fungus with toothpaste is an unexpected but effective way to combat pathology. Let's find out how it works.

Toothpaste for nail fungus

What is the effectiveness of toothpaste?

Fungal flora reproduces well and grows in a neutral acid-base environment. These are the conditions created on the surface of the human body. In addition, the skin, hair and nails of people constantly produce keratin, a protein component that serves as a breeding ground for pathogens of mycosis. It is important to consider all of these factors to eradicate the fungus.

Toothpaste can change the acid-base balance in an aggressive direction and coagulate (neutralize) keratin, depriving the pathogenic flora of nutrition and opportunities for existence. But only the one that is prescribed for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. These products usually include oxidants, antiseptics, colloidal silver, antimycotics, and antibiotics. Such toothpastes can not only provide hygienic oral care, but also fight fungal infections.

Thus, fluoride, essential oils and other components that make up most products allow them to be used off-label.

Criteria for choosing a tool

For toothpaste to really help against foot fungus, it is important to pay attention to the ingredients it contains. We learn from the table what should be included in the composition of the agent with an antimycotic effect.

Chemical components Description
TRIKLOSAN An antibacterial substance with additional antiviral and antifungal effects.
CHLORHEXIDINE A strong antiseptic, the concentration of which in the toothpaste is not enough to destroy the spores of onychomycosis. But it acts as an aid in the fight against infection.
FLUORINE An oxidizing agent that creates aggressive conditions unbearable for fungal parasites. Under its influence, the infection is destroyed.

If the toothpaste contains all three components, as well as additional substances in the form of essential oils and herbal extracts, this is what you need. Among such funds are Periodontal "Antibacterial protection", Dentavit with triclosan and fluorine, Mineral Dent, etc.

How is the treatment carried out?

Before using toothpaste for existing nail fungus, it is important to prepare the treatment area for the upcoming procedure. To do this, the feet are steamed for 20 minutes in a bath prepared from 1 tbsp. tablespoons of soda, the same amount of grated laundry soap and two liters of water. Then the skin is thoroughly wiped off with a towel, the softened stratum corneum is removed with a pumice stone, cutting off the nails affected by the fungus as much as possible.

Now you can use toothpaste too. There are three ways to do this.

The first recipe. Apply the paste in a thick layer to the surface of the affected nail and let it dry. After that, put on clean socks and go to bed. Wash your feet in the morning using tar soap.

Applying toothpaste to the lesion

The second recipe. In addition to the main ingredient, you will need one more component - cigarettes. Mix 1 tsp. a spoonful of toothpaste and ashes from three smoked cigarettes, treat the nails and the skin around them with the resulting product, cover with cellophane and put on socks. In the morning wash your feet with tar soap.

The third recipe. 1 hour Combine a spoonful of toothpaste with 3 drops of iodine, lubricate the nail plates affected by the fungus, insulate with a cotton swab and polyethylene, leave the compress overnight. In the morning, wash off the mask with water and tar soap.

Iodine and toothpaste

The procedures are practiced every evening before going to bed. It is recommended to continue the course of treatment until recovery. Additionally, you can enhance the effect of toothpaste and auxiliary ingredients with essential oils of tea tree, lemon or lavender. They are applicable for every recipe.

At what type of fungus and stage is toothpaste effective?

There are three stages of onychomycosis:

  1. At an early stage, the symptoms of pathology are not easy to calculate - they are often "blurred". The nail can fade, change shade (but not color!), The skin near it peels off. It is at this stage that you can use folk remedies, including medicinal toothpaste, avoiding conservative therapy.
  2. At the second stage, the fungal infection becomes more pronounced - the nail plate acquires a yellow tint, less often - black with candidiasis. The structure of the nail changes - it becomes loose, deformed. Itching, burning appears. At this stage, the toothpaste will not be able to cope with the disease - parallel drug treatment will be required.
Complex treatment of nail fungus
  1. The third advanced form of onychomycosis is characterized by fragility and rejection of the affected nail, an unpleasant odor and severe pain syndrome. It is quite difficult to treat pathology at this stage - often specialists resort to surgical intervention, and the average course of drug therapy lasts at least a year. Toothpaste can be used with advanced nail fungus as an adjuvant.

Alternative treatment is approved at any stage of the disease, but its effect will be most effective at the very beginning. Toothpaste recipes help with all types of nail fungus - dermatophytes, yeast and mold infections.

Use for children, pregnant and lactating

Toothpaste, as a popular way to treat nail fungus, can be safely used in children, as well as future and nursing mothers, since when used externally, there is a risk that individual components will penetrate the systemic circulation minimal. In addition, the concentration of active substances - triclosan, fluorine and chlorhexidine in the product cannot be called high, therefore it is safe for the body.

Contraindications and side effects

External use of toothpaste with triclosan, fluorine and chlorhexidine does not provoke unwanted reactions and has no contraindications, provided that the person has no intolerance to the listed substances. Treatment should be discarded only to avoid allergic reactions.

Reviews

Oksana, 34 years old. “A friend advised me to lubricate the toenail fungus with toothpaste. At first, I was skeptical about this method and already wanted to purchase the appropriate ointment at the pharmacy, as I noted that the folk remedy helps. Within two weeks, the nails regained a healthy shine and color, their condition improved significantly. Recommend".

Marina, 28 years old. “The toothpaste could not cure my nail fungus problem. The situation has partially improved, but the disease has not disappeared anywhere. Perhaps because the stage of the pathology was neglected. In addition to the paste, I used vinegar, tar and soda-soap baths, but only special medications prescribed by a doctor could cope with the fungus. I advise you not to delay with folk treatment, when it does not help, go to the hospital. "

If after 4 weeks there is no positive dynamics in the fight against nail fungus, then you need to contact a specialist. A neglected disease is much more difficult to eliminate, so you should not delay self-medication.
