Inflammation of the head and foreskin( balanoposthitis) - causes, treatment

click fraud protection

The head of the penis consists of cavernous bodies and is provided with a large number of sensitive nerve endings for sexual intercourse and ejaculation. At birth, the head is covered with a prepuce - a skin fold, which protects the sensitive head from injury and drying. In this case, the inner part of the prepuce has glands, which release a small amount of lubrication - smegma. Smegma prevents drying and hardening of the head.

Excessive accumulation of smegma leads to inflammatory processes in the region of the crown of the glans penis and the inner part of the prepuce.

Inflammation of the glans penis and foreskin is one of the most frequent reasons for men to go to a urologist. In medicine, the disease is called balanitis - inflammation of the head of the penis, or balanoposthitis - inflammation of both the head and foreskin. The disease does not depend on age and can occur in any period of life.

Causes of inflammation of the head and foreskin

To this pathological condition results a number of external and internal factors that together increase the risk of formation of balanitisOr balanoposthitis. Among the predisposing factors, the most significant are:

  • Insufficient personal hygiene;
  • Increased secretory activity of glands of foreskin;
  • Reduced immunity;
  • Diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders;
  • The presence of infection in the urogenital tract;
  • Long stay in countries with hot climatic conditions.

Inflammation can only be a head - isolated. However, the simultaneous inflammation of both the head and foreskin is much more frequent, which gives a characteristic clinical picture of the disease.

Forms of the disease

Urologists distinguish several forms of balanitis and balanoposthitis, among which are:

  • Infectious;
  • Circular;
  • Herpetic;
  • Traumatic;
  • Anaerobic;
  • Allergic;
  • Candidiasis( see here).

All forms of the disease have the same clinic and symptomatology, but differ for the reasons of origin and the infectious agent for its cause.

Symptoms of balanoposthitis

Symptoms of balanoposthitis include:

  • Hyperemia of the skin of the head. Redness of the crown of the glans penis and the contiguous foreskin speaks of the beginning inflammation.
  • Swelling. A little later, the swelling of the foreskin is added to the inflammation, which eventually becomes well pronounced and causes itching.
  • Pain in the head area. Discomfort and painful sensations cause both edema and direct inflammatory process. Pain can also occur at the time of urination, which indicates the progression of the inflammatory process.
  • A sharp and unpleasant odor from the penis.
  • Lymphadenopathy. The increase in inguinal lymph nodes and their soreness also indicates the progression of the disease.
If you have one or more symptoms, you should contact a urologist.

Diagnosis

Balanoposthitis can be both an independent disease, and the manifestation of latent sexual infections in men. Therefore, in two cases, diagnostics is required, with the exception of sexually transmitted diseases: when anamnesis reveals an active sexual life and there are no significant risk factors leading to the development of balanoposthitis.

In the case of primary inflammation of the head of the penis and foreskin, diagnostics are dispensed with examination, collection of data on life and disease of the patient. Further, the doctor prescribes local procedures and symptomatic medication.

In case of balanitis or balanoposthitis as a result of venereal diseases, obligatory laboratory diagnostics is performed. Such diagnostics include serodiagnostics, highly sensitive to a particular pathogen, and microbiological examination.

In most cases, balanoposthitis is primary and does not require additional research methods. Treatment in this case does not include the use of potent antibiotics, and limited to local means.

Therapeutic tactic

If you have symptoms that are characteristic of balanitis and balanoposthitis, delaying treatment to the urologist and self-medication can lead to progression of the disease and complications. In the most neglected cases, with purulent complications, it is even possible to use surgery with removal of the prepuce and a long recovery period.

With the timely start of therapy, it is possible to cure the disease in the early stages. At the same time, without resorting to the use of antibiotics and other medicinal substances with pronounced side effects.

Treatment consists in the use of local anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of antiseptic solutions and ointments. A good local anti-inflammatory effect has procedures with the use of trays from a solution of potassium permanganate. Also, washing with a solution of furacilin or hydrogen peroxide is used.

The use of potassium permanganate may cause burns to the head and foreskin. When preparing the solution, it is necessary to achieve complete dissolution of the manganese crystals.

If balanitis is the result of a specific bacterial infection or fungus of the genus Candida, then use antibiotic or antifungal drugs. For example, Clotrimazole and Diflucam, in combination with local anti-inflammatory and anesthetic ointments and solutions.

For men who have an active sex life, it is worthwhile to refrain from having sex during the treatment and recovery period. This will improve the effectiveness of therapy and accelerate the regeneration of tissues.

A prerequisite for effective treatment is to eliminate the causes that led to the disease. It is necessary to observe personal hygiene, sexual rest and lead a healthy lifestyle. The basis of a healthy lifestyle is the normalization of nutrition. Proper nutrition implies the inclusion in the diet of more fruits, vegetables, herbs, berries and a decrease in the share of fried, meat, baked products, smoked products. Maintaining the immune system through nutrition will improve the local protective properties of the skin.

Complications of

In case of ineffective or untimely treatment, as well as failure to follow the recommendations of the urologist, complications of the disease are possible:

  • Purulent complications;
  • Urethritis;
  • Cystitis, etc.

In addition to physical discomfort, the disease in the intimate zone leads to psychoemotional trauma. This can affect a man's self-esteem and subconsciously depress.

Never hesitate and call the doctor for help in time. Take care of your body and stay healthy!
