How and why is diaphanoscopy of the scrotum and testes performed?

Diaphanoscopy of the scrotum is a method of investigation that is used to determine if there are any bulky formations in the testicles. With the help of a directional source of bright light, the doctor shows through the tissues of the testicle. Since different anatomical structures conduct light in different ways, it is possible to draw conclusions about the state of testicular tissues.

Indications for

Diaphanoscopy is a procedure that helps to test the testicles with a directional source of bright light. Usually such procedure is appointed at visible changes of volume of a scrotum, or if extraneous neoplasms are probed in her. Basically diaphanoscopy is prescribed:

  • When screening - when you need to quickly inspect a large number of people, identifying carriers of possible pathology.
  • If the testicles are enlarged in volume.
  • If the scrotum is injured and there are suspicions of a foreign body.
  • If there is a suspicion that the inguinal hernia develops.
Now this examination is used relatively infrequently because of the spread of ultrasound diagnosis( see ultrasound of the testicles: preparation and holding), more accurate( but also more expensive).Nevertheless, diaphanoscopy retains its importance as a quick and inexpensive method of differential diagnosis of various conditions.

Preparation and conduct of the

study If the patient observes intimate hygiene, special training is not required.

The procedure is carried out in a darkened room. The examinee settles on the couch, exposing the genitals. The doctor has a source of illumination behind the scrotum and studies the structure of the testicle on the lumen. Thus, it can be quickly detected:

  • edema;
  • testicular tumor or epididymis;
  • cyst;
  • inguinal hernia, when the part of the intestine descends into the scrotum through the inguinal canal;
  • is an inflammation;
  • foreign bodies;
  • check the condition of the joints after the operation.
The examination is quick and painless. By its results, additional, more highly specialized methods of diagnostics are assigned.
