What is a wen

This is a benign neoplasm, which consists of adipose tissue cells enclosed in a shell, a capsule.

The medical term for this tumor is lipoma. Sometimes it is confused with other subcutaneous formations, such as acne, lymph nodes. The picture below shows a wen on the neck. Its distinctive features:

instagram viewer
  • has a rounded, even shape with clear boundaries;
  • soft and elastic to the touch;
  • moves freely under the skin;
  • does not cause painful sensations;
  • has no signs of an inflammatory process.

Lipoma sizes range from tiny, diameter 1 mm to large - over 7 cm.

The color of the skin at the site of the neoplasm does not change, but due to the adipose tissue that fills it, a yellowish tint sometimes appears (see photo below).

Some varieties that affect blood vessels or muscle fibers are reddish or brown in color. Small seals often do not show themselves in any way. For example, a wen on the back of the neck may not be noticed for some time. But as it grows, it compresses the nerve fibers of the surrounding tissues and causes discomfort.

Causes and dangers

Why lipomas occur is not exactly known. Doctors name only general factors, which, although not a direct cause, but provoke the appearance. These include:

  • Unbalanced diet associated with an excess of fats and carbohydrates.
  • Metabolic disease.
  • Hereditary disorders.
  • Hormonal changes.
  • Malfunction of the thyroid gland.
  • Diseases of internal organs: liver, pancreas, kidneys.
  • Sedentary lifestyle.
  • Decreased immunity.
  • Unfavorable ecology.
  • Bad habits.
  • Diabetes.

The degeneration of a lipoma into a liposarcoma, a malignant neoplasm, is extremely rare.

The main hazards lie in the following factors:

  1. In the case of strong growth, a fatty tumor squeezes the adjacent organs, muscle fibers, blood vessels, nerve bundles. This leads to impaired blood circulation, edema, neuralgia. For example, a large wen on the neck, in front, squeezes the esophagus and larynx. Because of this, there is a feeling of a lump in the throat, the timbre of the voice changes.
  2. New growths in visible areas are a cause of aesthetic inferiority and lead to stress. Any education on the face of children can become a serious psychological trauma.
  3. Large tumors interfere with movement. For example, a wen on the neck prevents free turns.

Treatment methods

It is not recommended to get rid of the neoplasm on your own. It is strictly forbidden to pierce, squeeze out, burn the seal. This will not help, but will only aggravate the condition: due to possible infections, inflammation joins it and it begins to hurt. Moreover, this applies to children.

Only a doctor can advise on all issues. If the size of the education is small, then a dermatologist or cosmetologist prescribes treatment, the child must be taken to a pediatrician for examination.

At the first appointment after a visual examination, the doctor explains in detail how wen are formed on the body, the reasons for how to get rid of, and then, together with the patient, chooses the treatment tactics.

If necessary, the patient is referred to the surgeon. For the treatment of lipoma, two methods are used - surgical or medication.

Drug treatment

This method is used if the diameter of the neoplasm is not more than 3 cm. With the help of injections at the site of the tumor, medications are administered that promote the breakdown of adipose tissue. The result appears in about 3 months after repeated repetition of the procedure.

It only helps in 80% of cases, in addition, there is a high likelihood of secondary formation of compaction, and the treatment must be resumed. In addition, the medicine that is injected at the site of the tumor has side effects: neuroses, digestive disorders, weight gain. So this method of treatment cannot be called effective.

Surgery

This method is considered by doctors to be the most effective for removing lipomas. Surgical intervention is used in the following cases:

  • Large seal sizes.
  • Compression of adjacent tissues.
  • Rapid growth of the neoplasm.
  • Location on open areas of the body.
  • Painful sensations.

Varieties of operations

Traditional surgery. Through a large incision, the contents of the tumor are completely removed along with the capsule. The operation is performed under local anesthesia, at the end of the incision, a suture is made and drainage is introduced to drain the fluid. This is an effective method, the likelihood of a return of the seal is minimized, but a rather large scar remains at the incision site. It is most often used to remove fat on the back, leg and other closed parts of the body.

Puncture-aspiration method. This method is similar to the traditional one, but the incision is made small. The contents are removed with a needle. There are no scars at the incision site, but there is a possibility that not all of the fat cells have been removed and the tumor may return.

Endoscopic surgery. With this method, an endoscope is inserted into the capsule. With the help of this device, at special frequencies, the lipoma is destroyed, and its contents are removed. The advantage of this operation: quick recovery, almost complete absence of traces. But the capsule remains inside, so the possibility of a relapse is high.

Removal by laser. The incision is made with a laser, and then the capsule is removed along with its contents. The whole operation takes 30 minutes, relapses after it are minimized, after it there are no scars, recovery takes place no more 2 weeks. This method is often used to remove formations from open parts: a wen on the neck, face, head. With the help of a laser, wen is removed from children.

Electrocoagulation. The lipoma is burned out with an electric current. This method is used in cosmetic clinics, it does not leave noticeable marks on the skin.

Liposuction. This method involves sucking out the contents of the neoplasm through a small, up to 5 mm, incision. After liposuction, almost no traces remain, but the likelihood of a return is high.

Radio wave method. It is very similar to laser in terms of efficiency and recovery. It is used for tumors with a diameter of no more than 5 cm. Recovery is fast - in 4-5 days.

Cryodestruction. The destruction of neoplasms occurs due to exposure to liquid nitrogen at low temperatures.

Traditional methods

Traditional methods of treating fatty formations are also popular and, judging by the reviews, sometimes help. Before attempting to get rid of it at home, it is recommended to visit a specialist. This is necessary in order to make the necessary tests and confirm the diagnosis.

Here are some medications and how to use them at home.

  • Ichthyol ointment, Vishnevsky ointment. Compresses with these drugs are applied at the site of the neoplasm and secured with a bandage. The procedure is done for 3 days, changing the compress every 12 hours. Then break for 2 days and repeat the entire procedure.
  • Aloe, Kalanchoe. Fresh leaves of these plants are cut lengthwise, applied with pulp to the tumor and fixed with a plaster. Such a compress is changed daily, and the result is visible in about a month.
  • Golden mustache. According to reviews, using this plant, you can get rid of a neoplasm in just 7 to 10 days. The leaf of the plant is kneaded, fixed on the sore spot with the help of an airtight dense bandage. Change the compress every 12 hours.
  • Iodine and vinegar. Mix the ingredients in 1 tablespoon and lubricate once a day.
  • Soap and onions. The crushed soap is mixed with gruel from the oven-baked onion in equal proportions and applied every day for about 6 hours.
  • Celandine. For home treatment, this plant is considered the most effective. Celandine juice is applied drop by drop twice a day. They buy it at the pharmacy or prepare it yourself from plants.
  • Wheat. The grains are crushed in a coffee grinder, a tablespoon of flour is mixed with water and applied to a sore spot for 48 hours. Secure the compress with an airtight tight bandage. You need to repeat the procedure 7 times.

Experts believe that these funds are ineffective and lead only to softening of the outer layer of the skin, while the capsule remains inside. With self-medication, there is a high risk of introducing an infection, which causes inflammation and suppuration, and subsequently leads to tumor growth.

Lipomas in children

Sometimes at birth in children, small yellowish-white tubercles are noticeable on the face, upper body. This worries the parents very much, but does not harm the child.

Small wen in newborns are called milia. They are considered normal, do not require special treatment and go away on their own during the first months of life. All that is needed is good hygienic care and supervision.

If the skin gets infected, then the milia become inflamed, the skin around them turns red. To prevent this from happening, you need to add antiseptics, decoctions of medicinal herbs to the water when bathing.

These include:

  • furacilin solution;
  • infusion of chamomile, calendula;
  • a weak solution of potassium permanganate;
  • infusion of oak bark;
  • sage broth.

Often, there are also larger wen in a child, in 98% of cases these are single formations ranging in size from 5 to 30 mm. In this case, you need to regularly take the child for examination to a pediatrician or dermatologist. If the tumor grows over time, then it is removed surgically, but not earlier than 5 years of age.

Fats on the scrotum

Men are often interested in whether testicular fat is dangerous, since they are not uncommon. This name often hides one of the types of fat formations - atheroma, about 20% of men face it. The next photo clearly shows how she looks.

Atheroma is formed due to a malfunction of the sebaceous glands and blockage of the ducts. Subcutaneous fat in this case is not excreted, but accumulates inside and forms a cyst of the sebaceous glands. Sometimes atheroma does not cause discomfort and does not cause harm, but quite often an inflammatory process and even suppuration begins inside.

Symptoms of inflammation on the testes in men:

  • Rapid increase.
  • Soreness of the seal.
  • Discomfort when walking in the groin area.
  • Disorders of urination or genital area.

All these symptoms are a reason to visit a doctor and decide on a treatment.

Often people are interested in whether the formation of a lipoma can be prevented.

Specific preventive measures does not exist. Sometimes it is enough to change your lifestyle: move more, monitor your diet, stop smoking, use alcohol, go for a medical examination to exclude diseases that contribute to the appearance of lipoma.
