Medication for chronic prostatitis

Chronic prostatitis is a common disease that occurs in 70% of men over the age of 50 years. Treatment of this pathological condition should be conducted under the supervision of a highly qualified specialist. This is the only way to get rid of the unpleasant symptoms of prostatitis and prevent the development of complications.

Elimination of causative agent

The etiological treatment of chronic prostatitis is aimed at combating infectious agents of the inflammatory process in the prostate gland. The first line drugs for this disease are fluoroquinolones. A distinctive feature of some antibiotics from this group is the ability to create high concentrations in the tissues of the genitourinary system. That is why the use of fluoroquinolones allows the most effective effect on the causative agent of prostatitis.

Most often, doctors prefer drugs such as:

  • ciprofloxacin;
  • Lomefloxacin;
  • ofloxacin.

In the absence of the effect of the use of these drugs or the appearance of allergic reactions to the administration of fluoroquinolones, the drugs of choice in the treatment of chronic prostatitis are macrolides. This is one of the least toxic antibacterial drugs that effectively affect the gram-positive, gram-negative and intracellular microflora. So the use of macrolides in the chronic course of the inflammatory process in the prostate gland is justified when the patient is infected with chlamydia or ureaplasmas.

Antibiotic prescription should be performed after receiving the results of a microbiological examination of the prostatic secretion. Only after this can be selected the drug that has maximum effectiveness against the causative agent of prostatitis( see "How is prostatitis treated with antibiotics?").Antibiotic therapy is carried out for 7-10 days under the control of the results of laboratory tests.

Correction of pain syndrome

In the clinic of chronic prostatitis, pain syndrome can come to the fore. To treat the syndrome of chronic pelvic pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used. Due to the need for long-term use of these drugs, it is recommended to opt for modern drugs that have a minimal risk of developing gastropathy. Inhibitors of COX2, for example, nimesulide, have a sufficiently pronounced anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, but at the same time have minimal effect on the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.

Preparations of the reserve in the treatment of pain in chronic prostatitis are antidepressants. These medicines help to reduce anxiety, emotional stress, affecting the neuropathic component of pain. The most frequently used for treatment of patients with prostatitis are serotonin reuptake inhibitors, for example, fluoxetine, imipramine.

Treatment of dysuria

In order to eliminate disorders of urination developing with chronic prostatitis, drugs from the group of alpha-adrenoblockers are used. The mechanism of action of these drugs is based on relaxation of the smooth muscles of the prostate gland. As a result, the patient ceases to experience difficulty urinating and visits the toilet less often. A positive result of treatment with alpha-adrenoblockers is observed in 50-60% of patients.

Local therapy

As a topical treatment for chronic prostatitis, microclysters can be used with chamomile broth and lidocaine solution, which have an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. In addition, immunomodulatory, restorative, analgesic agents in the form of rectal suppositories have definite efficacy, for example:

  • viferon;
  • bioprost;
  • vitaprost;
  • ostestin.

Obtaining a positive result of drug treatment for chronic prostatitis is impossible without correcting the lifestyle of the patient. When stating such a diagnosis, it is recommended to avoid prolonged sitting position, hypothermia, to limit the use of alcohol. An important aspect of preventing the progression of the disease is the maintenance of regular sex life with a regular partner.
