Structure, function and blood supply of the penis
The penis( penis) is the outer male genital organ. It is necessary for a sexual intercourse, in which sperm containing spermatozoa are released from it for the fertilization of a female egg. In addition, it serves to excrete urine from the body, which is formed in the kidneys, collected in the bladder and discharged through the urethra outward.
The structure of the penis
The male penis consists of three parts:
- base or root;
- body( or trunk);
- head.
Structure of the penis
Due to the fact that the penis needs an erection for a sexual intercourse( a significant increase in size), its internal structure is quite specific. In the trunk of the penis there are two so-called cavernous( cavernous) bodies and one spongy body. They have a large number of free cavities, which are actively filled with blood during sexual arousal, which allows you to increase the penis two to three times to the size of the woman's vagina and to have sexual intercourse. The cavernous bodies begin from the base and, extending from both sides of the trunk, extend to the head. Under the cavernous bodies lies the spongy body, which begins with the bulb and ends with the crown of the head of the penis.
Cavernous and spongy bodies are surrounded by membranes, fascia and are covered with a thin sensitive skin. Its peculiarity is the ability to form a large number of folds. With an erection, the folds are completely straightened, and when the stimulation stops, they form again.
Moving from the trunk to the head, the skin forms a free fold - the foreskin. It is freely stretched, can close and open the head and is fixed in the area of the penis frenum( on the border of the base and the head in the lower part of the penis).Bridle restricts the movement of the skin. Between the head and the foreskin there are specific sebaceous glands that produce the smegma.
Inside the penis lies the urethra( urethra).Its outer opening is located at the top of the head. On the urethra is allocated: with urination of urine, with sexual intercourse - sperm.
Features of innervation and blood supply
In the penis, especially in its head, there is a huge number of nerve receptors. We can say that this is the most sensitive organ of the male body. The irritation of the nerve receptors of the penis during sexual intercourse provides sexual sensation and orgasm. With orgasm, the muscles of the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles are reflexively contracted, which contributes to the release of sperm.
Blood supply to the penis, the main arteries and vessels
The blood supply of the penis has its own unique characteristics. There is a large number of vascular arteriovenous anastomoses( connections between the vessels), which have valves( pillows).With erection, a significant flow of blood into the cavities through arteries and arterioles is provided by a temporary block of outflow through these valves into the venous system. In this case, the arteries are strongly convoluted and, with erection, completely straightened, coping with increased stress. After orgasm, or the excitement subsides, the valves of the anastomoses open, and blood flows from the cavernous cavities along the venous bed.

Functional activity of penis
The function of urination is a complex physiological process related to the reflexes of the body. The penis is involved in it with his ureter in the final part, releasing the urine outside. Before and during the act of urination, sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation is triggered, cortical centers are turned on, muscles of the bladder and pelvic region relax. When urine passes through the urethra, the foreskin is slightly pulled out, opening the lower opening of the urethra. When the urine is separated, the tone of the sphincters is restored, the brain is waiting for new impulses as the bladder becomes full. In disorders of urination, the causes can be both in the penis itself( urethral stricture) and out of it( pyelonephritis, cystitis, inflammation and prostate adenoma), so a thorough examination of the entire genitourinary area of a man is always required.

The penis is the main condition and the factor of sexual intercourse. Mechanical irritation of a large number of nerve receptors of the penis in combination with impulses coming from the brain, provide sexual stimulation, erection and culmination of the sexual act - an orgasm with ejaculation. The constant hygiene of the penis, the prevention of its diseases is the basis of normal sexual life and the ability to extend the genus.
